ECM Computer Fix

I would like to relate how I fixed my “Check Engine Light” problem on my ’94 1MZ-FE Camry. The light came on initially without any other symptoms except for the “Power” lamp flashing intermittently. After trying the gas cap thing, I found that if I left the transmission control in “Power” vice “Economy”, the light would stay off after resetting it. If I put it in “Economy”, the light would come on almost immediately and the “O/D” lamp would flash. I took it to a shop and they pulled the code for a speed sensor fault. Since my speedometer was working properly, they said it was probably the ECM computer at fault. The shop had been seeing an increasing number of faulty computers where the only problems were leaking electrolytic capacitors. Since a new ECM computer costs over a $1000, I decided to take a look at my computer. Sure enough, one of the capacitors had leaked and was putting a short across several traces on the circuit board. I cleaned up the leak, changed out the $0.30 capacitor and haven’t had any problems since. So if you are having “Check Engine Light” problems and the error codes don’t match the symptoms, have someone check your computer. You might get lucky like me.
