i wondering if there's cheapo oil in cars on the lot. i'm waiting to reach my first 5000 miles until i change to some premium oil e.g. Mobil 1. jus curious as to wuts currently inside my engine.
man your first oil AND oil filter change should be around 2500miles, then again another oil and filter change at 5000 miles...
i surely hope youve been giving your engine a beating to allow it to wear in properly. going like a granma will only result in a very very poor seal for the top 2 rings.

I think, it is safer to change your oil at 3k miles(since you don't know what's in your engine now). Since it is new car, go synthetic all the way. Mobil 1 will be a good choice. It is also good to have a good oil filter.
Changed my oil and filter at 3k for my 05 Camry. Drove the car for 6 months before I got 3k on it. I suggest you change it at 3k as well. The oil was dirty but didn't notice many metal flakes in it. I used a toyota filter from the dealer for the replacement. You may want to use a tool that will help you remove the filter, as it took my boyfriend and I almost an hour to remove mine using our hands (mostly his) because the tools we had didnt fit my filter.
synthetic is only useful in ultra cold weather, if you have snow and ice etc i your area.
high performance cars and bikes, if not in snow and ice do not need synth, a good dino oil is fine.
oil and air filters should be more of a concern to you if you want to protect your engine.

I changed my oil and filter at 2k miles. I used a purolator pure one filter and regular mobil drive clean 5000 oil.
I changed it again at 5k miles and put in Mobil I synthetic. I stuck with purolator filters, but dropped to the premium plus level.
One a camry, I wouldn't put synthetic in too early. I would go on dino oil at least the 5000 miles.
No one NEEDS synthetic oil in a NA Camry, but it is nice knowing that by using it my engine will never sludge even if I miss my 5000k mile changes interval by 1000 miles I change oil about twice a year, so it costs me an extra $20, no biggy, sludge would cost an extra $5000 or so to deal with.

really? the manual says otherwise, not to make hard accelerations until 1000 miles. i dont know, i just drive the darn thing

if you dont give it early, the engine bore and rings will never 'mate' properly. for the first 10000m, change oil often, change oil filter even more often.
as soon as the engine is up to running temp, drive hard.

I changed my oil and filter at the 300 mile mark with regular dino oil. Then at 2,500 with Mobil 1. I will change it again at 5,000, and every 5,000 thereafter, using the Mobil 1. I always use a Toyota filter. Done several new cars this way, the engines in all of them went well over 200k.
Nice reference to Mototune's site, Kenny. I agree completely with their position on the most wear occuring right at the beginning of the engines' life. Todays' engines are manufacted under much tighter tolerances than in the "good ol days", when "break-in" was harder to attain.
Now days, after the initial ring-seating has taken place, seal failure is going to be the most likely engine problem you will ever have - unless you got a GM, Ford or Chyrsler product, and I'll not bother to go there.
I really only use synthetic for 3 reasons: It cuts down on sludge buildup within the engine, reduced friction, which equals less rpm's @ a given h.p. output, and less patronage of Middle-East oil.
