Transmission Fluid Flush

Hi gusy,

I have 94 Camry. I got oil change at Tires Plus last week and they recommend to have "Transmission Fluid Flush". Is this a good idea to do it now when there is no problem with the transmission? Thanks,

K.

No! At that age I would just do a Filter and drain and fill. You will change out about 1/3 of the fluid that way. Then in about another 5-10k do the same thing. To many horror stories about tranny's going out after a flush. They recomend it because it is a money maker for the shops.

NEVER NEVER NEVER replace the trans filter on a toyota vehicle! thats just a waste of money.
Pull the drain pan and clean out the filter by spraying it with brake cleaner. Then replace the gasket and reinstall the pan and fill your trans back up.
toyota uses a metal filter that unless it's damaged should NEVER be replaced.

The reason shops recommend a flush isn't because of the money(well yeah it is) but also because they're philosophy is why risk taking off the pan and having a leak. If they don't remove it they aren't responsible for a leaking transmission.
Flushes don't hurt newer transmissions but could break some particles loose on an older one and cause the valve body to get clogged.
At your cars age I would recommend me first mentioned practice of removing the pand and cleaning your filter and getting new fluid. Changing transmission fluid is as vital as changing oil. It just lasts longer is all.

The trans flush is a very delicate procedure called a "wallet cashectomy". Forget it. Never flush. Do yourself a favor. Pick up a few spare trans drain plug gaskets from Toyota, pull the drain plug, drain, install plug and torque to 36 lbs/ft , replace same amount as drained.
Do this once a year and your trans should last the life of the car if you don't beat hell out of it.

First, pull out your dipstick, and check the fluid if its red, its fine, if its kind of brown... go ahead and drop your pan, thats the only real way to tell.
