4th Generation ABS light on

Has this happened to anyone or heard about this. I recently had ksport coilovers installed and had to take my rear drum off to replace a lugstud. Ever since then my abs light is on and my e-brake is really loose. I had to loosen up the gear to release the brakes and tighten the gear back up when i was done. I know the ABS light is on becuase of that rear drum. Maybe a bad sensor or didnt tighten the gear back up enough? Whats the best way to tighten up my e-brake.

The other question i have is the noise coming from my front left suspension. I took the rotor and caliper off because it sounded like my brake was grabbing when i wasnt even pressing anything. This could be the problem because the caliper did not come off easily cause it was still grabbing the rotor. After opening up the caliper and checking out the pads, i put everything back together and still the same noise when i drive. Now im thinking it may have something to do with the backing plate. Maybe something is hitting that or the problem has something to do with the ABS light?

Help me out guys....

When the ABS light is on, it means that there is an error or problem regarding the system. It could be anything, like if a sensor is not working or it is sending out the wrong messages. Fortunately, your regular brake system should still be fine. Your ABS will just not activate when needed, though.

Most likely an ABS sensor has been damaged. Search on something like "ABS light struts" and you will find several people have reported this happening after changing struts.

^ yep me being one of em. Did you get a code off of it? If its a code 34 then its gunna be the driver rear sensor. All the people ieve talked to have had the same sensor go out. Although we have discs not drums there, dont think it matters.

Once the sensor was replaced, the light went off after a short drive.

Be warned since your abs light is on, you dont have abs so your brakes will lock on you if you do a hard stop. try to get it fixed asap, esp if its wet/snowy weather where u live.

Cool, Im hoping its just the sensor but who knows. I still have no idea what is making this grinding noise up front. Maybe something is hitting the backing plate

ever try jacking up the front of your car and turn the wheels with ur hands to see if there is any resistance? Or perhaps put it in drive and have it idle. that way you can make a better inspection of the sound etc. Just make sure your jackstands are secure etc.

My friend and I have jacked it up and turned the wheel when the car was in neutral. The wheel doesnt spin freely. Almost like something is grabbing. But it is a tinny metal type sound. What is wierd about this problem is I havent had this noise the first time we installed them other then the springs making slight noises. I might just try to take the strut off and put it back on again

Sure sounds like something is grabbing or out of allignment. Not sure if taking the coilovers off and putting them back on again will help but its worth a shot. Have you tried pushing back the brake piston into the caliper as if you were going to install new pads? Im not sure what that may do for you but it may unstick it if thats the problem.
its just a thought.

Thanks for the feedback bro. Getting an allignment would definitly be a good idea after having the suspension put on. Maybe that would cure things. Yesterday when we had my car up on jack stands, we went to take off the caliper and it was a little clamped to the rotor which it really should of just slipped off. So after taking out the brake pads and reseting them, i was praying that would be the cure but nope. After rolling out of the drive way there it was again. I think im going to try and get a video/sound clip recorded and put on here tomarrow and see if anyone has an idea of what it could possible be.

I was just cruising around looking for service information for my highlander and decided to find some for the camry too. So apparantly there are around 88 Service builletins for the gen4 camry.

At any rate i stumbed accross one that applies to the abs.

Component Description:
21. SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:ANTILOCK:WHEEL SPEED SENSOR
Bulletin Number: SU00200
Bulletin Date: MAY 2000
Vehicle: 1998 Toyota Camry

Summary:
THIS BULLETIN PROVIDES SERVICE INFORMATION REGARDING THE REMOVAL OF THE ABS SPEED SENSOR PRIOR TO REMOVAL OF THE REAR AXLE AND REAR SUSPENSION. *MR

So toyota is aware that the sensors could break if not removed prior to any suspension changes etc. done to the rear.

http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/r...tep2.9.Toyota*

that is the site with all 88. If you go back a step there are 2 recalls as well.
