Auto Transmission

Hi -

I'm new to this forum. I did a search and wasn't able to find the info I was looking for.

My wife owns a 1999 Solara SLEV6 - automatic. I'm posting on the Camry forum because I think the transmission is the same. The car has 63,000 miles on it. She is the original owner. The car has never been abused or neglected.

At 60,000 miles, I drained the ATF & replaced w/Dexron III. I checked the owners manual and asked at the auto parts store & they both said the capacity was 5 quarts. I put in 4+ quarts & checked the level. It seemed high but I thought it might circulate down to the correct level.

After driving 2700 miles I could smell hot ATF. I checked the fluid, it was dark & smelled burned. I called the dealer & they said the refill capacity was 3.7 quarts. So, we drove the car 2700 miles overfilled by 1+ quarts. I drained & refilled the ATF to the appropriate level.

The transmission seems to slip now when cold.

How much damage has been done? Is the slippage likely to get worse? Has this happened to anyone else? Do I have any case against Toyota since I filled to their recommendations?

Thanks!

5qt is for the flush dude! You did a drain and fill, you overfilled it. You broke it..your problem! I don't see how toyota is liable, next time buy a haynes manual or post on solaraguy before attempting any more herioc diy's without full info.

yea i couldn't see it being their fault even though they told you how many quarts to use it was still done by you if it was done by them then they are def. liable but since you did it i don't see how you could ever have a case against them as jhbhatia said next time get all the info on it b4 doing it

I don't think you hurt it! Toyota transmissions are pretty tough, the slippage will get better as the fluid gets older....don't worry about it....I bet your wife is pissed tho!!

I drained & refilled the ATF & included 24 ounces of Lucas Trans Fix. It looks & smells like ATF except that it is really viscous. She drove the car to & from work yesterday. It was about 32' F when she left & said that there wasn't any slippage. I'll wait & see how it works over time.

Anyone else tried Lucas Trans Fix?
