99 LE - remote keyless entry from factory?

I just got a 99 LE. All I have at this point is the valet key. Was remote keyless entry a standard feature? If so is a replacement fob from the dealer reasonably priced? If it's cheaper to get an aftermarket remote keyless entry system, is there a factory security system to be concerned with wiring-wise?

Thanks,
Sixto

First of all, you have to determine if you car has the toyota security system. To do that, you would have to:

1. look for the "toyota security" thing on your left hand side panel where your power mirror control and dimmer control switch is. If you have that, it is most probably a dealer installed alarm/keyless. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.

2. look under the driver seat floor to find a black/grey unit about 4 x 4 in. If not, remove the panel described above to find the black/grey unit.

3. If you have found the black/grey unit, get back to me and I can tell you which remote you need. Otherwise, you most probably do not have a factory/dealer installed system.

I am sure there are a lot of aftermarket stuff out there that are far better than the toyota system. Someone who has it in here can help you out.

Sorry missed one of your question. No, a replacement FOB from the dealer is not reasonably priced. Some dealer might even want to take advantage of you by telling you that on top of paying for the FOB, you need to pay an additional $60 for programing. You can get the FOB for far less somewhere else, definately not at the dealership. You can then get the programing sequence form the FAQ.

Thanks. I'll check for those things. I think there's an LED in a panel to the right of the mirror switch. Doesn't look factory. I forgot to mention that it has a start inhibitor security feature with a proximity key with a Norco Mitsubishi logo. Very annoying to have to wave the fob under the dash and wait for two beeps before the starter will engage.

Thanks,
Sixto

Must not be factory stuff. Also look to see if there is a VIP sticker on your driver side or passenger side window. Should be a 1x0.5 in sticker.

No security light in the gauges, no box under the seat and no box behind the mirror control panel. I checked with the dealer parts counter fellow and he couldn't find a replacement remote in the system for this car.

Thanks again.
