damn... 280miles / tank? u must floor it daily I get around 300-400 something miles/tank. Record so far: 470 miles/tank, all using 87 octane gas. I'm testing 89 octane gas right now to see if something my friend claims is true. Claim: less gas is used when driving long distance with higher octane gas. Another friend who was skeptical about this tried it with his I4 Accord and said it did use a bit less gas.
Not sure exactly how the Gen5 ECU works, but if it is programmed to handle only 87 and not reap any benefits from 89, 91, or 93, then it's a waste of your money. Reason being that higher octane fuels are harder to combust. Cars with high compression ratio or forced induction require higher octane so that spontaneous combustion (knock) does not occur at the high pressures experienced by the fuel.
Unfortunately, if a car is programmed only for lower octane fuel and doesn't advance timing sufficiently to account for higher octane fuels, the increased difficulty of combustion tends to slow down the flame front and you might not get complete combustion of the fuel. This may lead to carbon buildup over time and decreased gas mileage.
In my combined city/highway driving, my Gen3 averages 23mpg on 87 octane. I drove for a while on 93 octane and found that my mileage dropped to a consistent 21mpg, so this is in line with what I've stated above.
There are some cars that require 87 octane, but actually do better with higher octane. I think Volkswagens might do this. I believe these cars can do it because they are programmed for higher octane, but simply pull timing when lower octane is put in the car.

I wonder this too. My friend has an Acura EL and she said she filled with 89 because she drives a lot of highway. I wonder if the same apply to 2AZ engine? it would be really helpful if 89 can increase the mileage as I drive to waterloo from toronto every week. Hope you will find out the result soon and tell us more about it
