I'm just finishing up my full interior conversion from ugly lime green to deep reds and some blues. After trying several different methods for all of the interior lights, I was generally most satisfied with making my own LED arrays in place of the incandesants.
The ashtry was illuminated by a single incandesent and a green plastic filter. I initially changed the filter from green to red, but LEDs provide a much deeper, truer red so i decided to make a switch. Out of all of my LED arrays, this was by far the easiest.
Ashtray removed from the dash:
I drilled 4 1/4" holes for 5mm LEDs:
4 5mm LED clips were inserted:
4- 660nm T5 LEDs were inserted and 4 7/64" holes for ziptying the supply wires in the rear panel of the ashtray:
LEDs were soldered in series with a 220ohm, 1/4W resistor, supply wires are ziptied to absorb tesion from opening/closing ashtray:

The array taps into the lead for the old incandesent bulb. It is much brighter at night as these pics were taken during the day.
I'm almost finished (r we ever finished?) with my interior. Watch out for a video of all my mods together...
