4th Generation simple brake question

Ok, I've looked in my owner's manual and searched all over this site. I have a 97 camry 4 cyl auto. I want to get some performance brakes and rotors. Does my camry have rotors all around or is there a different kind of brake in the rear(drum)? I've been seeing lots of front rotors, but as many rear rotors. I don't want to buy front and rear rotors if I don't need the rear ones. I know, I'm an idiot lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

JBirdy,

My car is in my signature.

FWIW, mine has drums on the rear.

Good luck!

just look at the setup you have. Almost 99.99% of LE i4 camrys have 2discs + 2 drums. more than likely thats what you have!

jbirdy958,

I have a 97 camry LE I4 auto just like you. I have discs on the front and drums on the rear. For OEM replacement, get Brembo blanks disc rotors for the front. For the rear drums, I think mine are called Opparts.

All 97 4 cylinder Camrys have front disc and rear drums. The V6's have 4 wheel discs. It was the generation 3 Camrys where the 4 cylinder cars with optional antilock brakes were upgraded from front disc and rear drums, to 4 wheel discs. I don't believe the technology exhisted back then to do 4 wheel antilock brakes with rear drums, as it is done today. This is where some of the confusions comes from.

The generation 3 XLE 4 cylinder models had front disc and rear drums unless you the car came with antilock brakes; then you got 4 wheel discs. All generation 4's 4 cylinder models including the XLE's have front disc and rear drums.
