I took off my crank pulley on my old 5S-FE a while back and apart from it being really stubborn, it was not reverse threaded or anything. I had to use a breaker bar to make it easier to take the bolt off and I also had to use another bar against the side of the pulley as leverage, to lock it in place so that the whole assembly does not turn while the bolt was turning. After some muscle it came right off.
