Axle shaft gasket???

How come there is no mention of the transfere case to axle shaft gasket in the step by step procedure in the manual? Is not a requirement to install one? Anyone ever leave it out? Would seem kind of pointless to replace the axle shafts and not use the gaskets, but then again it does seem unlikely that anything could get past the axle/transfere case once the shaft is torqued down? Any comments on this? If it is important shouldnt it be mentioned in the manual?

you mean where the axle shaft is actually inserted into the differential. If so they use a seal like you would find on a camshaft or crankshaft. you can replace it if you relaly want to but they dont seem to leak very often. I cant remember ever replacing one when I was working for Toyota. Try the reapir manual sticky at the top of the page for more info.

IIRC, there is a setup that has a bolted plate at this location, never seen it myself... apparently you can pull the shaft by unbolting this plate, weird... A lot of times, pulling the drivers side shaft you will catch the spring on the diff axle seal and tear it out, seal replacement is then required...ask me how I know..is that a spring in there I said to myself? Lucky I noticed it and it didn't fall into the trans...whatever can go wrong will is my motto...

Axle assembly gasket

Just to clarify this isnt an O ring or Seal, it is a gasket that is supplied with the axle assmblies, it is for the end of the axle assembly the same shape as the end of the axle and the bolts that hold the axle in. It i basically a round thin paper gasket that sticks to the end of the axle assmebly where the bolts go through, it has indentations for the bolts to slip past it when installed. There is no mention of the gasket in the Manual so I don't think it is critical as the mating surfaces from axle to case seem flat, just wondering if it is a problem if not installed when putting the axles in. Thanks.

ok I know what you are talkinga bout now. You jsut unbolted the axle from the inner joint and took it out that way. It took me a while to figure out what you were talking about. I never removed axles that way when I was doing it. I always took theentire thing out. IF i remember correctly there is no kind of grease or lubricant right. If not then you probably dont need to worry about any kind of gasket. If there is then yes you need to ahve a gasket. You could always make one. You should be abel to get some kind of gasket paper at a parts trore and make one out of that. IF no kind of grease or lubricant than dont worry about it most likely. Nothing is going to leak out so what is the harm.
