Finally, after several months I reassembled my center console. I finished my final LED array which illumminates the PRND2L shifter lights. I originally also made a illuminated shift indicator light, but I had a difficult time installing it and it looks much cleaner without it. Here we go:
The PRND2L shifter lights were originally lit by a single 194 bulb with a green condom. The PRND2L symbols also have a printed filters which enhance the colors and allow the R to be orange and the N to be a brighter green. These filters make it difficult/annoying to change their color. So, I got to work:
I proceded to remove the PRND2L filters with a x-acto knife. I must warn you, this very difficult and very easy to screw up, so think twice before attempting to do this. Below is a rear shot of the beginnings of scratching off the "L" and the finished "P":
The first 2 letters were hard but the others were easier after the practice:
Here is the finished product lit from the underside:
Now onto the LED array. The PRND2L letters are approx. 3/8" wide. I wanted all the letters red except for the "R" which would be orange. In order to keep the red and orange light separated and to improve the overall light dispersion of the LEDs, I fabricated an acrylic light-transmitting box. This is simply a 1/2" acrylic piece with holes for the LEDs in the proper places and a divider between the red/orange LEDs. Reflective mylar on the sides keeps the light in, although this was later taken of as it was unnecessary:
Here is the array with the LEDs installed:
The illuminated array:
A rear assembly shot:
Like i said, I had a illuminated shift position indicator light, which I removed. The shift indication positions were then blacked out from the rear with electrical tape. Here is the final installation pics:
That looks really good man, I was thinking about doing the same thing, only with the speedo and tach area. my stock cd player isnt worth changing the lights on because it skips every other seccond, and im purchasing a red and black headunit from pepboys, but for the climate control area and the shift light area ill be sure to use you're DIY. it looks awesome in the picture and i bet even better in real life.
Great job. I was wondering if there was any way to remove the green shit from the overlay......
I am just lighting it all blue for now with a red led for the reverse. I want to add a green led for the N.
Oh yea........does anyone here have LEDs the same style as the ones he used for sale loose with resistors?
I do not want to have to buy 4million of them if I only need a few.
Damn....I keep forgetting things to ask.........
Does anyone else here have stock fog lights? I want to change the light color in that switch.
I also need to buy a second fog light housing.
