Question Multiple Timing Marks on Camshaft Gears

I recently had to replace the water pump, so I figured while I was at it I would go ahead and replace all drive belst including the timing belt and the plugs and wires. On my initial investigation, I found 2 marks scribed in the left hand camshaft gear, and one scribed mark on the right hand gear. On the left hand gear the is a scribed mark just to the right of one of the spokes marked 3V, the next spoke over there is a scribed mark in the middle of the spoke and it is marked 4V, I for the life of me cxan not get this thing in time. I verified TDC and that the distributor rotor qas pointing to the number on cylinder. The engine will start, but it runs erratically and will not idle. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am all out of ideas.

Thank you very much.

Question

Thanks for the input but that doesnt address the fact that on the left hand camshaft gear there are 2 marks, one marked "3V" the other marked "4V", and on the right hand gear there is only one mark. Which one of the marks do you set it too?

^ Look under 2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE engines. You have a 3VZ-FE.

Step 13 says this:

Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC again. Turn the right camshaft until the knock pin hole is aligned with the timing mark on the No. 3 belt cover. Turn the left pulley until the marks on the pulley are aligned with the mark on the No. 3 timing cover.

So there should be a mark on the pulley (cam gear). And a mark on the timing belt cover.

Something like this:

Notice the notch on the timing belt cover (marked with white paint in the pic below):

Notice the marks on the pulleys, their right above the notch for the knock pin:

^ Pic above shows a 3V marking, but its lined up to a mark on the timing belt, not the timing belt cover.

Can you take a pic of the camgear in question and post it up?
