its not the cables, reverse is pesky in all manual trannys because its not always engaged and changing gears just does up the synchro. forward gears are bevel cut (at an angle like ///////////) and are always engaged. changing gears engages a mini-clutch type device to match speeds then the teeth engage the shaft to the spinning gear. reverese is straight cut gear (like |||||||||||||) that actually engages and disengages when you change gears. theres absolutely nothing you can do about that aside from getting an automatic. thats also why its a bad idea to engage reverse while the car is moving, esp forward. for the basics, read www.howstuffworks.com 's article on manual trannys
