Tire Problems

Hi guys, I have a set of BBS wheels that I put on my 96 Camry. The wheels are 17 X 8. 40 offset and tires are 235/45/17. After put them on, rear wheels rub the lower part of the structs like crazy. I tried 5mm and tires still touch the structs. Can I solve this problem if I change the rear tire to 215/45/17? Would appreciate any input. thans

it just depends on how much room you actually ahve to clear between the strut and the tire. More than likely it will clear the only thing is you will run into the same problem when you go to rotate the tires. If you are only planning on changing the rears. in 5000 miles when it is time to rotate the tires next time.

Cyorke, so what you are saying is that rubbing on rear tires would wear them down and eventually give some cleance. Do you know would the tires come off the rims or any safety issue due to rubbing? Rotating wheels is not a concern for me becasue I'm planning to get 215/45/17 to replace the 235/45/17.

waht I meant was if you were to go to the 215's they would probably fit. But in your original post you state you are jsut going to put hte rears on. IF you do this when you go to rotate the tires you will run into the same porblem.

As for leaving them on and jsut letting them rub, I wouldnt do it personally. to much chance of damaging the tires and if they were to get hot enough or wear the sidewall of the tire enough it could cause a blow out.

Thanks for the advice Cyorke. I have been a faithful reader of this forum and seen you give out helpful advices all the time. I have 1 more question and hopefully you can shade some light on it. Would it be wise to have 235/45/17 tires in the front and 215/45/17 in the rear?

It is possible but I personaly would not do it. I like to rotate my tires regularly to get even tread wear. +sizing ain't cheap.

Bullmkt, thanks for the reply. I'm not concern with rotating tires now becasue I'm not a frequent drivers so 5000 miles can take me years to achive. What I want is to get the car to run without rubbing. Like you said +sizing isn't cheap and that's why I can only replace 2 tires at this time instead of all 4. I'm wondering with 235/45/17 tires in front and 215/45/17 in rear would give me any problem?

If they fit without rubbing like you said then yeah...you can do it. A couple of the guys on here run or are looking to run 9 inch wide wheels on the front for traction. Personally, I run 18X8s with 245/40/18s all the way around. No problems thus far (60k plus miles on current 18s, second set of 245/40s).

edit: I just ran those numbers on tirerack and I have a taller tire with a wider cross section that the ones you claim are rubbing. Mine are close but don't rub...must be your offset, although 40 is within the norm for Camrys.

Well, that's the purpose of this thread, to find out whether anyone can give me any definitive answer on 215/45/17 tires on 17 X 8 wheel (40 offset) can solve the rubbing problem.
