Glowing RED

Today when i got home and parked the car i noticed a little smoke coming from under the hood. So ipopped the hood and took a look. It looked like there was a little something burniong off of the exhaust. I had thought maybe i just picked something up on the road. Well to night when i got back it was still smoking and stuck. Open the hood and the exhaust was glowing red. Is this normal? or could the cat be getting clogged and causing it to retain heat? Not even the exhaust on my RX7 would glow red, unless i drove the hell out of it.

Could be that your exhuast valve is sticking open, allowing some combustion gas to enter the exhuast manifold.

If a valve were stuck open youd know it sounds like you need to look at your ignition timing, if the ignition timing is retarded enough the fuel mixture will still be burning when the exhaust valves open and it will burn in your exhaust causing it to glow red, if the timing is way way off look at your timing belt too.. that is if you have a distributor though heh

maybe the cataletic converter is blocked up? my buddy's jeep did that when the honeycomb on the inside broke loose and clogged the pipe. though there was signifigant power loss due to the muffled exhaust.

An extreme lean condition would also cause the exhaust to glow.
However, the catalytic converter is more likely the problem, unless you have some extreme engine tuning that you have not revealed.
Also, the converter is easy to check - take it to a reputable muffler shop.
Heck, if you have more than 100k miles on it, I'd replace the converter anyway.
