chic getting no help

I'm hoping that you guys can help me out. As a chic all the auto shop wants to do is f&^@ me over. Here's the problem. 97 2.2L camry 102,000 mi. Idling too low (about 600rpm), idles rough and dies but only on occassion. Starting to get crappy gas mileage (25-27 mpg) before it was getting around 31+. What is going on??
I changed the plugs and the old ones were fine, no oil or anything. The wires are okay too. What else should I check out?? Thanks.

Hmm....you've already looked at the plugs....BTW, what color were the coating on the plugs?

Look into the ignition coil and the other parts at the distributor.

Try some fuel injector cleaner additive in your next full tank of gas.
My father-in-law had the same problem with his 93 Maxima recently - after a tank with the fancy Valvoline FI cleaner is runs like new again.
I use the cheaper STP FI cleaner in at every oil change.
My 92 Camry is at 275,000km (~172,000mi) and still going strong.

Good luck !

I bought the car in July and did some routine maintance then but only the regular stuff since.
The plug color was fine, it was a dark brown...looked like they needed to be replaced.
I've already tried adding fuel injector with the gas and nothing is helping.
The colder it gets the worse it runs.
Actually tried the A/C for grins...wow the car didn't like that. Idled very rough and would have died if gas wasn't applied.
So what's going on??

Assuming all of the above is not the culprit - guys, do you thing it could be shotty temperature sensors that is causing the ecu to think that the engine is hot when it is infact cold and not reving the engine fast enough?

A friend had a similar problem...his idled really low and he'd have to step on the gas pedal just so the car wouldn't die. He took out his throttlebody to clean it and found the butterfly valve was sticking due to build up. He cleaned it really well and then his car idled fine. I had a problem with an irratic idle.. mine would jump and drop. I got my coolant flushed and the problem went away.

Hope this helps.

Idle Speed

My 92 Stick did this when I first got it. It ran about 600RPM, So I set the idle screw up a bit to 900. Runs real smooth now. Wont help the MPG though

Is the temperature guage coming up to a normal position? Does the heater produce good heat? If the thermostat is missing or stuck open the car might not run well in colder weather.

based on the site I referenced above, the first anecdote sounds similar to yours;

Question: 1992 Toyota Camry 5 sfe mileage: 82000. Vehicle towed into my shop idles really rough; I replaced cap, wires, rotor, and plugs. Still idles rough, replaced timing belt, fuel filter, and injectors, fuel pressure o.k. Replaced dist with good one still runs rough. Compression at 175 all cylinders. No codes, replaced igniter, checked all grounds ok removed both o2 sensors to check for backpressure still idles rough. ECM was replaced at dealer. They were not able to figure it out either. I checked for vacuum leaks externally non-found. No vacuum inside valve cover either this has me and my mechanics stumped. Customer states vehicle was running fine, and then went to start it the next morning when it started running rough. I also checked injector signal at all injectors' waveform o.k. all data from scanner normal, will not accelerate at idle, bogs unless I spray carburetor spray rpm will pick up and run smooth above 1800 rpm and stay running smooth even after I stop spraying carburetor spray. But when you let it go below 1800 rpm. It starts running rough again. This car is kicking my butt. I would really like some help. Mike

Answer: Check the EGR valve to make sure it is closed at idle and operating properly. In addition, check the fuel injector flow. Even though you checked the injector waveform, the injector flow may still be faulty.

i had an issue like that when i first baught my car, it turns out that the intake controler was broken and fixed open, so it was allwas taking in too much air and stalling the engine, especialy in the harsh winter the car wouldn't start without pushing the gas pedal first. might want to take it into a dealership to have it looked at.
