my car rocks back and forth after i let go of foot brake on driveway ?
so when i drive up my driveway, put it to park, turn off engine, and let go of the foot brakes, the car starts to slide back then forward, then back and forward a few more times ??
when this is happening, the engine/tranny starts to rotate (as if it is connected to the wheels and not the car frame in sync with the wheels small movements of foward and backward.
mounts dying ? or is this engine movement normal... ?

Same thing happened to me... It's most definitely ur mounts.... 2 of mine were shot... Living in boston for 5 years, the road salt took its toll on my mounts... Check those first.. I replaced em myself.. I remember one of them being a total bitch.. Hope this helps..
parking brake. the ground isnt level so the wheels are rolling back on the brakes solution: parking brake. That rocking is bad for the tranny
I second that. The parking brake is your main parking device. The park position of the transmission is only a back-up / assist.

Modification: Changing something to what you thought it should have been from the start!
why would it be the mounts? the tranny locks in at a certain point, if your past the point, it will roll to the point... its momentum that causes it. i just lock my parking break before i shut off the car.
it should be normal, when you turn off the car and let the brakes go, you should hear a click.
i think becasue your "P" drive could not fully lock up your car on an angled driveway. next time try to pull the e-brake and then let the foot brake go =)

Your parking brake isn't actually doing anything. The rocking back and forth you see is the give in the engine mounts which means that the weight of the car is resting on them if the car is on an incline.

I'm telling you, its the mounts... I had the same problem and thought it was the parking brake...

i agree with you
as far as i know, it is normal, my car does it too, every car ive driven did it aswell
its because you didnt put your Parking Brake on...
if you did, it will stop the car from moving when you let go of the brakes.
but since you only put it into Park, the car now relys on the transmission to stop it
the transmission does NOT 'lock' the wheels into place like the parking brake does...
it has a bit of 'give' before it actually catches the car from rolling away.
when it does catch the car, the momentum caused by the small movement causes the transmission to take the weight of the car and then rebound it a bit, thus giving you that rocking forward and backwards.
^^ yup what terry said is right on. All you need to do to stop it is to pull your parking brake up higher/ engage it properly to stop it from rocking back and forth.
When you re-engage the car back into drive, it would sound like at *crunch/thump*.

I'm bumping this thread because that's exactly what my '98 Camry is doing and it annoys the fuck out of me.
The car seriously wobbles back and forth even if I try to go easy when I release the brake pedal. It makes little to no difference if I release all of a sudden of real smoothly wich makes me think it's a bent metal thing that gets the pressure and throws the car back when the weight sits on it.
It could very well be the mounts but the question is : is there different sets of mounts for engine and tranny or they're all held up by the same parts, wich would make me change the mounts all around?
from now on i'm always gonna use the parking brakes when parking on a slope but the thing is... when i DO actually go back and forth.. the engine rocks back and forth.. like.. thats NOT normal is it ?? thats why i thought it was the mounts...
It is normal for the engine to rock to some extent when you put it in park and release the foot brake. You ahve a car that weighs in excess of 1 1/2 tons. Do you really think that it is ont going to move some. When you put the car in park the only thing that is holding it in place is waht is called a parking pawl. It is a small latch.lock type mechanism inteh transmission. When you put the car in park it is not going to be lined up exactly on teh parking pawl. The trans is going to rotate a certain amount until it hits this pawl. when it does the car is going to rock because of the weight of the car. It is completely normal. GO get in any new car and park it ona slope of any angle and put the car in park without setting the parking brake and it will roll and the engine will rock to some extent. The only way to combat this is to set the parking brake before you release the foot brake. ONce you set the parking brake and release the foot brake the car is till going to move slightly though. There is no way around it. That is jsut part of physics and gravity and all that other good stuff you learned in basic math classes.
