P0340, Camshaft Position Sensor Malfunction.

Can i continue to drive my 97 cam 4cyl with this engine light code. Will I mess anything up. How do i correct it? how much would it cost

P0340, CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR MALFUNCTION.

The cam position sensor is important. Your car has DIS (distributorless ignition system) and uses a crank & cam position sensor to determine when to fire.

I'd bet that your ignition timing is retarded (no pun intended) cos of the malfunctioning cam position sensor.

Get it fixed ASAP.

The only problem I am having is a rough accelation of of 1st gear, after that it runs fine. What do i need to replace?

^ Well, the cam position sensor for one, if it is indeed malfunctioning.

Other then that I couldn't tell you. Take it to a mechanic and have them look at it.

anybody have a diagram or picture of this part. What does it look like. Where is it located. I had a major oil leak and my mechanic change my oil pump, waterpump, timing belt, crank and cam gaskets along with the top and bottom gaskets on the engine. Did he fowl something up. Can I wiggle this senor in place to see if it "kicks" on

The sensor shouldn't wiggle. I wouldn't mess with it if you don't know what your doing.
