Gen5 Wheel & Tire Question

My neighbor is going to put on 215/70/15 on his Camry. i told him he is better off upgrading his rim size. i explained that with that sidewall height he will sway way too much when turning the car at high speed. question is : is there any danger in this combination? thanks mates.

not dangerous...really. Its just not going to make quick maneuvers as responsive. Ive got 205/70/15 on my car...went up a bit from the 65 series sidewall..because of the poor roads where I live. It makes road imperfections a bit easier to absorb...but downside cars response is a "tad" less now. A camry to begin with doesnt exactly handle great, its more set up for comfort anyways.

it will depend on how hard he drives.. if he grandmas EVERYWHERE.. i mean everwhere as in a bicyle takes corners faster then go for it.

that much wall on a psaanger tyre is dangerous.

if you must get a light commercial tyre, although that will loose comfort it wont feel like a boat swaying while youre waiting at the lights.

remember that a 215/70 is A LOT taller then a 205/70. not to mention a 215 section tyre o a 6" rim is baaaaad.

first of all 215/70 is NOT taller than 205/70.. 215/70 actually a lil bit WIDER than 205/70.. u prolly mean that 215/70 is taller than 215/65..

Its actually taller and wider.

215 is the measurement in mm from bead to bead

70 is the aspect ration- 70% as tall as it is wide

a 215/70 will be slightly taller and slightly wider than a 205/70.

However, actual numbers (measurements) vary so much from mfg to mfg, this is a largely academic discussion. You have to actually pick out the tires and physically measure them to really say that one will be taller and/or wider than another.

man, he just owned himself lol =)

anyway, i would advise against mounting a 8.4" wide (215 section) tyre on a 6" wide rim. theres just not enough sidewall stretch for it to be stable (a bit tid bit... for this amount of width different you would want a tyre 1/2" smaller...hence why drag slicks are 14.5" on 15" rims.)...heck, the stock 205 section tyre size is pushing the limits of a 6" rim... the 4 cylinders got it right with their 195 section tyres...

and one last thing... i have 215/60R15's on my stock 6" rims... DO NOT like it at all...

i hear that. I told him that he better just upgrade his rims to 17", then he can wear 215's or 225's. i would hate to see him fly off his rims at 70 miles on a tight turn off the highway...lol.

I think that you are missing the point - the rim needs to be wider. The reason that you see people with 215 or 225 mm tires on a 17 or 18 inch rim is because they move to a 7, 7.5 or 8 inch wide rim. The rim diameter is not the main issue.
