I own a 2005 CAMRY LE 4 cylinder which I purchased in November. I know this a fairly basic question, but can anyone tell me if it is worth it to spend extra money on synthetic oil vs. convention oil?
Does it provide that much more protection? Also, its says to change the oil every 8,000 km; does this seem a bit exaggerated to you guys? I plan on keeping this car for a long time.
Can anyone tell me how often they change their oil on a 5th gen camry? Im thinking of changing it every 6,000 km.
yes. I think synthetic is the way to go for the long run. But of course, arguments can be made that if you get your oil changed within the appropriate time interval, you should be ok. IMO, I still prefer synthetic because of oil sludge buildup problems. Synthetic seem to have less tendency to turn into something nasty like that.
If you intend on keeping the car until its in the ground go to synthetic. If not stick with regular oil. I myself use Mobil 1 Synthetic (the one made to last 15,000 miles) and a Mobil 1 Synthetic filter and change it every 10,000 miles. On the rest of the Toyota's in the family I use regular oil or a blend with a Toyota filter and change it every 5,000 miles. Good luck. Jon.
Stay away from Fram filters. They are probably the worst filter you can buy.
Mobil 1 filters are good, but as with everything Mobil 1 you will pay a premium for it.
Other good filters are Wix, Napa Gold filters are rebranded Wix, Purolator filters, and Toyota filter. Pep Boys Proline is rebranded Purolator.
Toyota had a service bulletin some time ago, about sludging in Camry engines. It pretty much just said change the oil more often than recommended. (In my opinion usually you cant lose by following the more frequent severe service intervals anyway.) I know it applied to my V-6 not sure if it also meant the 4 cylinder but presumably so. I think the bulletin was brought about because of people leaving their oil in the engine too long and then having massive sludging problems. Regardless, i have always ignored manuf recommended interval for oil and just done it more frequently.
I use dino and change every 2 or 3k miles. If im taking it to Vegas or Palm Springs in the heat i might switch for mobil 1 for that change only. I just cant bear leaving ANY oil in there for longer than about 4,000 even though logically i know Mobil one is good for way beyond that. So i usually just use the cheaper regular oil.
Also you can get a few of the benefits of synthetic by just mixing in one quart of Mobil 1 at yur next change. Its compatible with dino (thanks to the US military's Mil spec requirements).
I started out using Castrol and at about 30 thousand miles I noticed some buildup
of crud and the dipstick had a coating of crud on it. I changed it every 3 thousand miles.
I use Redline and change it every 10,000. The filter gets changed every 5,000.
I also change my tranny fluid every oil change and diff fluid every 5 oil changes.
Power steering fluid gets changed every filter change.
I use Motul brake fluid and change it every couple of years.
I heard that wix filters have gone down hill as of a few years ago.. I went back to oem
and now they're made in the philipines. I heard that Fram has a few good filters but
none of those are for my 98 Camry..
Does anyone know what filters are good other than the rediculously priced TRD Japan filter.
Oh! I have a personal issue with Mobile 1.
Everyone seems to prefer Mobil 1 motor oil in their cars. Is it really that much better?
My goal is for my car to last, not necessarily performance. It is a camry after all. In this case, if i go with synthetic oil, does the brand really matter? ie. Motormaster vs. Mobil 1?
I just bought some Quaker State full synthetic for advance engine 5w30. Anyone use this in their cars?
There seems to be a lot of debates out there to whether conventional vs. synthetics, and of course different brands. Im confused.
I love my car and I want to put good stuff in it, but just not for the sake of it.

I'm with you on that. I use Mobil1 synthetic with a Toyota filter on my car, and I change it every 4K miles, give or take a couple of hundred miles. I'm not sure of the benefits of Mobil1 over other synthetic brands. That's all I've ever bought as far as synthetic goes, but I've never had any problems with it in previous cars.
What u guys think of Quaker state full synthetic oil?
Also, does oil filter brand matter? I usually buy FRAM or Motormaster oil filter. Is it better to buy the toyota oil filters or other brands?

I will give you a great oilguy site to check. Sure everyone is all over the map on oils. Watch who you listen to. The synthethics after my review are useful only in frequent really cold start applications - So I use synthethics in winter & dino oil in summer . My 97 4 cyl shows a little puff on warm weather start ups but I am at 192,000 km . I change once in the fall & once in spring & sometimes a summer change if lots of miles . I really think oil changes are overdone on almost all cars . See -- http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi
They discuss filters there too. Motomaster is puralator I think?
