Starter Stuck Starting

So last night at 2 in the morning I go to leave my friend's house. I turn the key engine starts but it doesn't stop trying to start. The starter is running the same RPM as the engine and just won't quit. So I attempt to slowly move the car out of the neighborhood to not annoy all the sleeping neighbors, it does that fine. I park the car in the street and take the keys out thinking this would solve the problem. It doesn't, the car is still trying to start and won't give up... it had a mind of its own.

So the cars just sitting there turning over and over and over, meanwhile I am trying to grab any wrench I can at my friend's house. Unfortunatly most college students have nothing as far as tools go. I couldn't take the battery off... i was royally f#$%ed. So I call AAA to see if they can get to me and take the battery off and have a tow. Well I didn't have enough time for that as the starter began to catch fire. I immediatly said... I gotta call 911 I'm on fire. I call 911 and they send a fire truck within a few minutes. They arrive just as the starter's fire fizzled itself out... I looked like an idiot but I wasn't having my car catch on fire.

I got a tow home and this morning we removed the baked starter. It's black and definetly looks like someone took a torch to it. A few forums I have already visited said that the part of the starter that moves in and out of the flywheel had gotten stuck in the fly wheel. I confirmed this and have now replaced the starter. I put a 1993 2.2L starter in my 1998 2.2L. Works just like the old one!

Next time turn the ignition off right away. If it doesn't release, pull the fuse. Unless you wanted to torch the car.

Pulling fuses wouldn't change anything nor would turning off the key. The plunger in the solenoid was most likely stuck holding the electrical contacts engaged. Pulling the battery wire off is the main way to correct this. Another thing would be hitting the starter with something solid, like a tire iron.
Glad to hear the car didn't burn up.

As he stated in his post, he had no tools to disconnect the battery. With the ignition off, the relay should have opened to remove the power to the starter, but may have been stuck after being on so long during his drive. Removing the fuse would do the same as disconnecting the battery, where the power through the relay would be removed.

Like Tercel GTS stated. Use the tire iron to hit the starter. Most cars have a tire iron in the trunk. You could even try the side of your fist in a pinch.
