NEED HELP! If anyone can help or give some insight.

Hello. My mother owns a 97 Camry and tonight she tried starting up the car but the ignition will not turn. The steering wheel is locked as well. If anyone can help I greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

IT is normal just put the key in and shake the steering weel as you turn the key. It is a aint-theft feature

The thing is that she does not have a anti-theft system and the steering wheel is locked alongside with the ignition not being able to turn. I was trying to turn the wheel to see if the ignition would turn but I can't turn the steering wheel at all.

ok, when she parked, she turned the wheel until it locked, to fix this, turn the wheel away from the locked position, opposite from the direction that is locked, you will know what i mean, turn it as far as you can, then turn the key, it should free the steering wheel as well as the ignition.

I just got the steering wheel unlocked and the wheels are straight but the ignition still won't turn. I tried turning the wheel left and right while shaking the key but nothing.

She doesnt have to have a security system to have that feture. Like the last poster stated turn the weel opsite to the way is is locked and then turn the key.

p.s. the reason it is hard to turn is because there is no power steering when the engine is off

When you put the key in you have to push the key in and turn it at the same time

I know that. I turned it allll the way to the left and the ignition won't turn. I turned the wheel and tried turning the key at the same time.

Try to lube the key like put WD-40 on it and then put it in the ignition that might help
