depends.. some cars take the high octane stuff.. if its a 4-banger it wouldnt be the best to put in it, but you still could. It will make your engine alot more hot and might ruin something, or just scortch the shit out of it. You have to look and see what the reccommended fuel type is for the car first.

i know that it reccomends to use 87, but since using high octan will make it run smoother, i thought it was ok, and it would clean out some carbon, but i was just worried about blowing a second engine

If your car does not ping on 87 octane, running anything higher than 87 octane is just throwing money away. Higher octane fuels have an additive that raises the flash point of the fuel (the temperature at which the gas will ignite). This is so that high compression engines can compress the gas and air mixture tighter without having the heat of the compression ignite the mixture. It must wait for the spark of the spark plugs to ignite the mixture. I have talked to engineers at petroleum additive companies and they all swear that most major gasoline manufacturers use the same additive package in all their grades of gasoline. The only benefit obtained by using higher octane than 87 in an engine designed for 87, is if the engine is old and has carbon built up around the intake valves. Then the engine may ping on 87 octane and 89 octane might reduce or eliminate the ping. Your fuel mileage will not be increased and your car will not run any smoother.

Mike

I think Mike covered it pretty well! No you will not burn your valves running a higher octane but there is no benefit unless you are bumping compression or timing, other then If the higher octane has extra cleaning additives as some of them claim!

dont believe anybody about this... nobody knows just test it yourself 2 thanks of 87 and 2 of 93 and if you like it stick with it if not use 87 but i have had always good expiriences using 93 v6 camrys runs a lot smoother with it anyway

I think the V6 needs 91 or 93 if available. If it's hot mine will occasionaly ping
with 91 just for a sec until it retards the timing from the knock sensor after
I've driven the piss out of it.

v6 camrys are meant for high octane, they retard for anything lower.

as for the difference between engine cleaness etc between fuel grades, thats down to the manufacturer and how clean they make their fuel.

i run BP Ultimate (its BPs top grade PULP) and in their leaflets they even say that they process their Ultimate to be cleaner on engines then their regular ULP...which would of course be putting down their regular but meh...i get approx 30% beter mileage with it.
