ABS light stays on after strut replacement

I brought my 2000 Camry LE (4cyl) in for front and rear strut replacement. When I picked my car up the ABS light stays on. After bringing it back to the shop they hooked the computer up and found that the rear ABS sensors are not communicating (this is what they told me, not sure if that's correct or not).

My question is this: is there something they could have missed while replacing the rear struts? Could the wire to the sensor been unplugged somewhere during the installation? Not knowing how the sensors work, could they have lost a spring or something when they removed it to replace the struts? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could have unplugged the sensor, cut the wire somehow, or there could be debris that fell in between the sensor and the pick up wheel causing it not to get a signal. THey should take core of it for youthough. If the light wasnt on when you took it in it shouldnt be on when you leave.

Thanks Cyorke. I checked to see if the wire had been cut anywere and it hasn't. It doesn't even look as though they removed the sensors from the brake housing. On the drivers side the wire was pulled very tight from having the bracket that attaches to the strut housing cranked too tight. Perhaps they messed something up when they re-attached the bracket.

Is there a way to check each sensor or are they both tested during any type of testing? I will be taking the car back tomorrow, I just want to be able to talk knowledgeably with them when they try to tell me the light was on when I bring it in.

THere should be a way to check each individually but I am not sure what kind of specs you should get. There should be ohm reading taht you can take on each one. You would most likely have to disconnect them and then test. But like I said not sure what those readings wold be.

Have it scanned OBDII should tell you what sensor. If the wires were pulled then it may have an open internally in the sensor.

The sensor wire needs to be disconnected from the chasis when removing the struts. If this is not done then the weight of the drum or disc brakes will pull on the wire and break the wire internal to the shielding. You won't see that it's broken just by looking at it, you'll have to ohm it out.

but again....YOU shouldn't have to do it, since whatever the particular problem, it was the shop's fault

Sorry you have to join the busted ABS club...
Same thing happend to me and the mechanic knows they should remove but only 1 outta 100 or more cases do the sensors break. On the Camry the Toyota Service Board (TSB) put out an annoucenment letting people know the sensors must be removed from the rear before changing the struts. The busted ABS sensor is more than likely the one on your driver side and its going to cost that shop a good amount of money to replace. But the change job is real fast.

You should get both sensors tested as probably only one broke.
Good luck and make sure the shop takes responsibility. To check the sensor you will need to take part of the back seats out.
