Gen5 Braking while sliding on Ice

Hey, what’s the Best way to brake while your car is sliding on ice? This just happened to me like 15 min ago on a block while coming home. It rained and sleet today, I'm Approaching a stop sign, and started to brake a little less than Half a block away, car felt really weird and the brakes weren’t working, I was on Ice from the point where i started to brake all the way to the end of the block where its a 2 way intersection. I applied the brakes and nothing was happening, car went out on to the intersection and thank god no cars were coming from the left but traffic from the right had a bus coming. The bus driver sees that I am sliding and am having trouble stopping so he stops and pulls away from me. when I saw that bus i got nervous and i pushed my brakes all the way down, when i got to the middle of that intersection i was off ice and I could hear my tires screech onto the pavement. That was pretty scary to be sliding almost half a block for about 25 seconds. My tires are good and my brakes are good, but I don’t have ABS.

You can't slam your brakes like that without ABS, what you need to do is pump the brake.

i didnt slam the brakes, i was moving at around 12 mph down a block, and was braking to approach the stop sigh as i knew it was a bad weather so i did everything in advance, like i said when i steped on the brakes the car felt weird so i started to apply the brakes a little harder and release and repeat till i got nervous when i was about to cross on to the intersection and saw the bus and pushed down all the way. when my car was out at the middle of the intersection, it came to a complete stop as the tires screeched on the pavement

YOU could have also used engine brakeing by putting the gear selector in 2 or L. That works prity well

Like Pt baller said in that situation you ahve to pump the brakes. Instead of pushing the brakes harder you should have released them then immediately stepped on them again and continued doing that until you could gain some kind of control. Stepping on the brakes is not going to make the car stop any faster than what it is doing at the time. The wheels have already locked up so it is not like you are slowing them down any more.

Also like Camralon said shift the trans into a lower gear with the selector. Either 2 or L. Most of the time 2 will work. then you can take your foot off the gas and let the engine help stop you. You will most likely still ahve to pump the brakes but it may give you a little better control.

Like what everyone else said, pump the brakes. I know what you mean about the sliding, my 73 Lincoln doesn't have ABS, obviously, and I had one incident like that and it scared the shit out of me.
Felt like I should pull over and take a breather after I had stopped.

I did something similar to pumping the brakes at 1st but never really let my foot up all they way, down hard up a lil then down again till i got freaked out by the bus. After that incident was over, i felt like taking a Piss out side, as for i had to go like 30 min before that. I have never experienced sliding on Ice for Half a block Long. Come to think about it, i would had Threw the car into Park, But the Brain dosen't function that well under Situations like that.

No grip is no grip. If you are sliding down the ice, there is not much you can do.

Anticipate and drive to the conditions.

At least get snow tires. Let me tell you, they make a BIG difference, even on ice.

indeed. the lower operating temps of snow tyres help a lot.

byt yeah, no grip is no grip =)

what you want to do is NOT lock your wheel sup as everyone has said, which with engine braking it MAY do that.
