4th Generation V6 5-speed tranny troubles?

I put synthetic tranny oil in (full change ), a few weeks ago, and initially, the shifts took more effort, but it got better and better (less effort and 'lag').

However, it seems that when I shift, things are hitting each other inside the tranny. For example, on a slow, 1/4 throttle upshift from 2nd to 3rd, I got a quiet 'bang' (or metal on metal 'thud') from something hitting. This was a slow, lazy shift. Also, I am 'feeling' some grinding when I shift, like someone was trying to put the car in gear with the clutch out (not that I have done that...seriously!)

What the hell is going on? This car has 95k miles and things better not be giving up now!

Check your cluthc master cylinder to make sure it is full first. It sounds like the clutch is not disengaging all theway when you step on the petal. If it is low then your clutch is either wearing or you will want to look for leaks at the slave cylinder on the side of the bellhousing. If you find noleaks then it may be possible to adjsut the cluth slightly. If you get under the dash you will see a rod that comes out the back of the clutch petal. On the abck of it there is a jamb nut. Loosent ath nut and you can turn the rod. You want to turn it so the clutch petal gets farther away from teh floor. Sorry it ahs bneen a while since I did one so I cant rememebr which way to turn it. What this does is help compensate for the wear on the clutch disc. IT is jsut like your brakes as far as the material it is made out of the same as the brakes. When it wears it sometimes needs to be adjusted slightly.

Cool, I will look at my Hayes manual to see what they say.

However, I get the gut feeling that it isn't the clutch, as the issue is sporadic.

You probably put the wrong fluid in... go to the MR2 forums and read up on what the MR2 Turbo guys use in their trannies - your Camry V6 manual is the same.

For now, if you are worried, change back to a good GL-5 rated 75W90 gear oil and things should get better.

I don't know is this is at all related but my '96 that I got a couple months ago has always had little .. grinds? I dunno. Sometimes when I go from 2-3 really slowly I feel some resistance. I've driven plenty of standards with more resistance, but more still with no resistance. I have a feeling my synchronizers might be shot, but it could just be normal operation. 1-2 and 3-4, and well as 4-5 are smooth as silk, but that 2-3 shift .. hitches a little.

my clutch is properly adjusted, but low. I can push the pedal in halfway and take the car out of gear with no noises (not that I do that regularly, of course) so the cutch is disengaging fine.

Of course I haven't even checked my tranny fluid since I got the car so it might just be low... *shrug*

I'll shut up and get out of your thread now.
