How Many Oil Seals???

1992 Carmy, V6 (sorry, don't know the engine code or size, just that it is a V6), Automatic transmission.........

The stealership told my girlfriend that "all of her oil seals are leaking" (this was before I started dating her). I have decided to remove her engine so that I can rid her of the leak that makes it look as if her engine is constantly on fire.

My questions are......
1) How many seals/gaskets are there that hold oil in???

2) When I remove the engine is it easier to remove the transmission with it???

3) Any tips or secrets that I need to know when removing it/them???

I am a Jeep guy (if you couldn't tell from my screen name) and I know that the message boards for me has a wealth of info, so I thought I would give the professionals here at TN a chance to help me with my Camry project.

Thanks y'all,
Houston

Well it depedns on which oil seals they are speaking of. THe most common oil seals to leak on any toyot aengine are th front seals. I happen to have a 92 3VZ engine in my garage and thesea re the front seals. THere are two cam seals and a crank seal. To replace these you have to remove the timing belt. THis can all be done inthe car so you dont ahve to remove the engine to do the front seals. Then there is the rear main seal. This one you either remove the engine or the transmission. The engine is easier to get out the top but the trans pretty much has to come out the bottom. You jsut have to get the car up high enough to get the front subframe out from under it and then lower the trans out.

THen you ahve the valve cover gaskets, and head gaskets. The oil pan does not use a gasket they use RTV sealant on those.

These are the main seals and gaskets that the 3VZ engine has. She could also be having problems with power steering leas. This could be from teh pump or the rack and pinion. THen you also hav eht transmission. Most of the time they jsut leak around the pan gasket. There are several (12-16) 10mm bolts that hold it on. replace the pan gasket nad do a drain and refill of hte fluid and you are done with it.

Have they given her any indication as to which seals are leaking or jsut told her the seals are leaking.

They told her that "all" of them on her engine were leaking. I am going to just replace all of them (cam(s), front and rear mains, valve cover, oil pan (even though I didn't know they didn't have one), all but the head gaskets). The engine runs great and she gets good mileage so I decided against removing the heads. If after further inspection of the block when it is removed I find the head gaskets look like they could be puking oil then I will replace those as well, but I am hoping that I do not have to since it runs so good already.

i am guessing probably just oil pump seal, crank shaft seal and camshaft seal, if it is valve cover gasket, it should be visible where you can see the oil stains on near the top of the engine.

Ah, I learned something.....I didn't know it had an external oil pump. Where is it located so I know to be looking for it when I remove the engine???

Thanks for all of the help guys.

^ Its on the side of the engine (block). Right behind the crank pulley.
