if i were to tint my tail lights black, is that illegal/could a cop pull me over for that? (in the state of California)

In Texas, the rule is that taillights must be visible from 50 feet. Note that is a judgment call on the cop's part, and still invites the "chat on the side of the road" and you never know.

Check Cali state code (statutes) - search "taillight" if you can find the statutes on the web.

My guess is - its technically illegal to tint taillights at all (even in Texas), since (technically) your modification would not be DOT approved. A savvy cop (or one looking for something to write you up on) might think of that, and you have no defense.

In Cali, they probably would get out the road spikes and tasers. No wait, that would be Texas...

Since I wanted to tint my taillights, i was also worried about the law. When a cop pulled up next to me to see what I was doing one night, I decided it was the perfect time to ask him what the law is in california. He states, that nothing should be done to your stock taillights color in any way and form. But i said screw that, and just did it one day. Its not like I wanted to make them really dark, I just wanted to make them a darker red instead of that gay ass bright red. If you plan to BLACK black them out, just be careful, and plan to get pulled over, but in all, depends on how grumpy the Po is.

I have never been harrassed for the smoked lights, I have been rocking them since 2002 or something like that..

I've never had a problem with my tinted tail lights and I've had them for a while now. I've been pulled over for window tint and the cop hasn't said anything about my tail lights. As long as they are visibly red when they lights up you shouldn't have a problem.
