Need help with intake sensor! (all u guys with cone filters)

i was just down at the car looking at how to run the CAI and i tried unscrewing the sensor plug out of the big metal bit directly after the plastic airbox (Gen 2, perhaps theother are the same?). i could only get it out a little bit and saw lots of little metal connectors. i put it back together then tried to start the car, and the engine wouldn't start. the starter motor
would do its thing but the engine just wouldn't fire up. i tried redoing the sensor and luckily the car started up. this little experience really freaked me out.

so my question is to you all is how do you get out that sensor plug, then how would you connect it to the metal tubing of a CAI? most CAI's seem to have a little hole in them wher a little tube goes in and thats it, but from what i've seen that doesn't seem to be the case, or i mustn't have done it right. thanks

The air needs to go through that 'metal box' That's your air flow meter. When the connections were loose, your engine didn't know how much air was getting into the system so it put in the wrong amount of fuel and the engine died. On the gen2, you don't need to unscrew the plug. There should be a metal clip on each side of it that you can pry off carefully, then the connector should come off. You will need to get an adapter plate for the square side of the air flow meter to make it round. If you don't have one by now, get a repair manual (Haynes or Chiltons) and you can see what you are supposed to do to take the intake system apart.

Anyways, long story short, the whole metal box on top of the plastic airbox has to be part of the intake.

oh ok i see, so i'll have to intergrate that box into the tubing. thanks for that, i've seen a picture with that, but i thought it was one of those water trap things.
by the way, i couldnt have stuffed it up or anything could have i? cause i got it working and it sounded alright and stuff and i gave it some revs, but i havent taken it for a drive yet. everythings alright isn't it?

I doesn't sound like you opened it up, so it should be fine. The only possible damage is to the wiring. If you want to check it out before going for a drive, start the car then go in the engine bay and wiggle the wires there. If everything is fine, everything is fine. Then you know to be more careful next time.

i did pull the plastic shroud on the plug back from the metal and saw lots of little male and female connector type things, but i'm pretty sure now things are fine, i like to know that theres not going to be a problem lurking later on. i will try the wire wiggle thing. thanks for all your help

When I said 'opened it up' I mean the inside of the sensor itself. You might have to be carefully of the electronics, but its probably fine.

Yep, and you can also replace the tube up to the throttle body if you would like also. When you have at all apart you will easily be able to see how it works. The sensor should be fine in any orientation as long as the air moves through it in the correct direction.
