3rd Generation Brake Experiment

Begin rant -

I pulled the ABS fuse (or unscrewed it) in the hopes that the brakes would have ample stopping power to lock the tires up. Short answer . . . NO!

Maybe when it's wet out I'll get some tire slippage. If not, then why even have ABS if the brakes suck. Maybe I need to put fresh brake fluid in and make sure there's no air in lines.

Done ranting.

I actually found my Gen 3 broke much much better with the ABS disabled (I accidentalyl clipped one of the ABS sensors when I replaced the CV boots, easy to do)

I road without ABS for a couple months and found the braking to be much improved.

Toyota has come a long way with ABS in 10 years though. The ABS system on my gen 5.5 is good, I don't have any complaints with it.

BTW - I could lock the brakes on the gen 3 when the ABS was disabled, no problem.

I have a 94 V6 LE without ABS and I can hardly get it to lock up at all. I cant see why you would want it to lock up unless you were jsut rying to flatspot the tires or goofing off.

I don't have abs on my car, and I kind of wish that I did....it just makes things easier how you can just slam on the brakes instead of pulsing it yourself

I can lock up the brakes on my Gen3 all the time if I'm not careful. You guys are probably running on stickier tires than I am though. I have some Michelin all-seasons for now.

Tires

I have no idea what brand of tires are on the car, but I can garauntee they're not sticky, as the treadwear rating is in the 400s, so they're crap as far as performance is concerned. Do they make a big brake kit for the 3rd gen Camrys? If so, then have they tested the braking distances? I need way more bite!

^ that's weird

check your brake fluid, your rotors, bads, brake lines, etc etc

you should have no problem locking up your brakes, even if you had sticky tires

I agree, it is easy to lock up my tires even with my wagon. I have never found for wanting on my brakes even coming down off of the mountain.

i got a gen 4 and with abs disabled i could hardly get my car to skid either, but i have amazing braking power. I actually found in my car that disabling abs made it stop slower and pedal feel was terrible. at anyrate i prefer to have ABS as my dad's corolla doesnt and ive had close calls due to forgetting it doesnt have ABS.

3rd Generation Testing will continue

All I know is if these tires don't lock up on wet pavement, then something is awry.

If it continues not to rain down here in South Florida, then I'm gonna get a gallong jug and paint the roads myself!

are you brake discs discolored? Look like they are burnt and scored? are they sort of brown?

Perhaps you brake discs and pads were heated and glazed. This would cause poor friction.
