Which air filter is best?

for the CAI i'm doing i can't decide on air filters, i want a cone style. are they much of a muchness really, or is the K&N xtreme better than a standard K&N filter and is the K&N actually better than the A$25 one i found, and, or should i settle for one that pricing falls in between the two (i'm thinking simota)?

also for Gen 2 guys wanting to get cone air filters i found one on www.simota.com.au that plugs directly onto the AFM and does not need an adaptor plate, it has a square opening as opposed to the normal round opening. go to the 'kits' link once your in the site.

K&N is the best out there.. all the imitation ones are not that great.. at least the paper filter imitations.. if K&N makes a better filter than their original paper filters.. then I'd say go for it.

There's many cheap imitations but there's also some better ones out there too.. just don't buy the $10 cheap ones, that's all.

Well K&N do make the best filters, but if you want some cheap but good, get an RS Akimoto one. They are pretty loud and do the job well.

I was looking into getting just a drop in K&N filter for my car, but after looking around a little bit i found they were somewhere between $50-$60 U.S, so then i went to a local speed shop around town and asked if they made custom CAI's and he asked what car i had and what not about my car, then he said about $150, which included installation, filter, and mandrel bent pipe, and if i wanted for extra i could get it powder coated or colored how i wanted it.
So my question is, does powder coating make any difference other then looks?

any filter is going to work better the dirtier they get. the more dirt that gets on the filter, the less dirt that gets in (and the less air that will get in as well)... :P

which in terms of performance means that it will suck...

btw the only thing powder coating might do would be make the air velocity "speed" through quicker...

i wasn't planning on it, i'm keeping the filter up out of the way of water and stuff, and i don't want to double the cost of the CAI by adding one of those AEM ones and wait two months for it to arrive. if i could get one cheap over here than i would get one. but it doesn't rain so much down here and i'm the only one who drives the car so i know to stay away form puddles and stuff.
