Theres no economical way to get a REAL increase in hp in generation 2 camry's. You could try small things, but they will only go so far.

If you are looking to lay down some serious hp, spend twice the value of the car, and spend hours of splicing wire harnesses, you could try the infamous 3sgte swap.

well since i'm a poor college student, i'd like some economical ways to increase the power. i'm not looking for anything extreme, just trying to squeeze as much out of it as i can at a price i can afford.

It would be easier if you had a JDM engine, the 3S-FE "usdm?" engine
is loaded with emissions systems o2 sensors and cat-converters witch
takes the engine down from 140hp to 115hp, the same systems makes
it hard to get more hp out of the engine, since they are "strangling" the engine
for the sake of emissions.

Heh heh, do like I did on my V6...always use premium gas! lol

Seriously, though, there are some small things you can do.

1) Hollow-out your catalytic converter and put a straight-pipe in there. (approx 5hp gain)

2) Replace the entire exhaust with a larger diameter, preferably from manifold to tailpipe (an expensive way to gain approx 10-12hp)

3) Try the old cold air intake (CAI). (maybe a 3-4hp gain)

As Phatfantom68 said, the only real way to seriously increase the hp on Gen2s is to swap the motor...if only my friend's 7MGTE would fit in my engine bay! Drool...

You actually get 8-9hp extra from removing the cat. When the European
emissions regulative came in 1988 the hp of the 3S-FE engine went down
from 130hp to 121 the only difference was the catalytic converter demanded
by the new emissions regulative.

Edit: Don't mess with the engine if you don't think that you're up for it, and don't expect
noticeable improvement if you do try.

will hollowing out my cat affect the amount of hydrocarbons coming from the exhaust? the area i live in does emission testing and i just had to get a new cat put on, which cost me a little over $500, cuz my car failed the emission test.

i will probably go with the larger exhaust when its time for exhaust work, since my pipes are looking a little rusted.

as far as the CAI goes, i got that air filter and adapter combo from ProCarParts and that helped a little, so i guess next is to fab up a CAI or RAI to replace the stock air tube.

are there any more easy ways of getting power out of the 3SFE?

has anyone put a SAFC on their 3SFE? if so, how much of an increase in performance did you notice?

ok, so i dont know what everyone else's Autozone has in stock, but the ones by where i live sells custom CAI or RAI parts so you can make your own and route it however you want. i got some parts and made a RAI for my 3SFE. and the best part is i can add on to it whenever i want just by buying more pieces. but my question is, when i decide to add on more parts to make a CAI, what is the best way to route it that will give me the coldest air charge and will be out of the way enough to not suck up water when i drive through puddles?

Theres a hole underneath the fusebox in the engine bay. Unbolt the fusebox, remove the battery, then enlarge the hole (I used a air powered cutoff tool).

You also have to remove the resonator (big black plastic box) inside the drivers side fender.

Piping will run through the hole into the fender.

Puddles are not a problem, so don't worry about it. The filter will be covered by the fender and wheel well liner anyways.
