When Torqueing down rear strut mount bolt to stop rattle should I...

....have the rear jacked up off the ground? The rear mounts are rattleing really bad, and my mechanic gave me a tip to get the noise to stop that simply involves removing the strut nut and turning the washer under it upside down and then reinstalling/retorquing the nut..but should the tires be off the ground for this. I figured I'd try this before wasting an entire day of what is supposed to be very nice weather this weekend, I purchased new front and rear struts but if I can replace the fronts only and get away with this simple fix on the rears I'll be happy. I have the back seat out and will see if this trick works to stop the infamous rear strut rattle on my 94 camry. Thanks for any tips or suggestions.

DO NOT JACK YOUR CAR UP when torqueing down yoour rear struts.!!! Those bolts hold your struts up straight. plus by leaving the car on the floor the weight of the car will sit down on the Struts making it easier for you to screw things in. I just installed an new suspension in my car. Rear struts PAIN IN THE ASS!!. stupid design, placing them behind the seats of the Gen 4....................................

lol, i was gonna say, I dont have no washers.

And yeah the rear struts are a royal pain in the ass. Not as bad as the coupes with the same strut location though. you have to stretch over the front seat to even get to the top of the struts... Pain in the ass.

torque

OK I torqued down the big strut nut. I was able to get 5 or 6 full turns out of each side, the end result was the noise is still there. I didnt bother removing the nut to see if there was a washer underneath, since I am just going to put new mounts and struts back there anyway and also replace the sway bar end links at the same time. I'd rather do the job right and restore itsuspension to like new condition. Funny thing I discovered after I pulled out the benc seat was that I have fold down rear seats LOL!! Make the access to the strut mount bolts a breeze. The more I work in this car the more I can appreciate how they are put together. I bought a set of 4 Gabriel GR2 Ultra Gas Struts, but didnt get them yet but they are on the way. Nothing wrong with doing the job right and replacing all 4 instead of trying to mickey mouse things by tightening bolts that dont need it. THe car will ride like new when its done since I already replaced the ball joints and axles and I'll be replacing the outer tie rod ends when I do the front struts as well.
