4th Generation Installing Door Speakers?

I plan on buying/installing front door speakers on my 98 Camry since the factories keep rattling. And I need to know how I would go about doing that. Do I need to take off the whole door panel (and how) or can I just cut off the grill and install it that way? Any help is appreciated.

Gotta take off the whole door panel. The grille is fixed to the door panel (you'll see once you get it off) but are you speakers actually ratteling, or could it just be the trim that is in the area? If you can push on the door (or where you think the rattles are coming from) and the rattels stop, then you might just need to panel retainers, and not new speakers, that is, unless you want new speakers (oh yeah!). Check out the A/V section for more info on that sort of thing.

You have to take off the whole inner trim panel to get to the speakers. It isnt hard to do.
The toughest part would be to take the door lever trim off. Other than that it is just clips and screws.

However plan to have to make up a new mdf baffle. This is because the toyota speakers are installed with a 3 screw configuration and all aftermarket speakers are held down by 4 screws. Ie it will not be a straight screw in/screw out job. Unless you want to install it straight on to the metal.

Yep You must take off the entire Door. I dont know if there is a DIY on the forum but if you get a Haynes Manual it will show you the break down, as well as diagrams for everything in your car. SUPER HANDY!!

you can take out the factory speakers and screw the AM ones in with self tapping screws. Both the front and back have that plastic bracket that you can screw into.

Door Panel Removal DIY

I wrote a DIY on how to remove the gen 4 door panels. In the thread he needed to take the door panel to replace his exterior side mirror, either way its the same steps to get to the front door speakers. So follow my DIY to remove your door panels.

Yeah, follow AutoBox's tutorial, except for the rubber nipple part, thats only for the mirror. However, I think Auto missed one thing. At least on my ride, and I assume most Gen 4's, there is a plastic push-screw type fastener on the door panel, near where the front door meets the rear door pillar. You should just be able to push in the center, which will release the catch, and then pull the entire small plastic piece out.

Overall, there are 6 screws (two bottom, two middle, and two top (door lever and beneath the sail panel, hidden by a circular plastic trim piece), one plastic screw type thing (as aforementioned) and once you get those off, there are 4 panel retainers on the inside of the door that more or less, "pop" out. Of these last four pieces, there is one almost right below the speaker grille, one above, near the edge of the door panel, and one opposite each of those (lower and mid door at the "back" of the door panel. After that, you should just be able to lift the door (so the metal catch releases from the door frame) and pull out the entire panel.

If you need pictures, at least more than what AutoBox has provided, let me know, and I can probably get you some from my install. Hope it goes well.
