Think about this....
This has to do with film build up in the plenum and injectors...
Consider this: each time you turn the engine off there are fuel and oil vapors stuck in the intake plenum with no where to go. As the engine cools, they go from a vapor to a solid and stick to everything. Hence the varnish like buildup common to the intake plenum.
Like they said earlier, if both valve covers are not vented - (PCV system not working), your engine may build internal pressure. Once this gets underway, seals and gaskets start to pass fluids, then she gets messy.....
I second that Oil standoff from the filler cap removed (engine running) is a sign of lots of blow by. Do a compression test. Chances are, you have a broken ring or the engines was not cared for in its prior days.
Oh - broken rings allow hot gasses passed the rings into the crankcase on the compression stroke. The PCV system can only handle a small amount of blowby. When it becomes excessive, the vapors turn to solids and you have oil in the PCV hoeses which connect to the intake. Make sense? Hint, a healthy engine will have a vacumm at idle in the crankcase, not pressure.
