HIR Bulb review

I put a set of high beam 9011 HIRs into my 01 camry (9006 socket) and the light output is amazing. The lumen output is close to that of HID. HIDs are 3200 lumens i believe, these HIR bulbs are 2500 lumens. A normal 9005 bulb is 1700 lumens.

HID - 3200 lumens
9011 HIR - 2500 lumens (high)
9012 HIR - 1800 lumens (low)
9005 - 1700 lumens (high)
9006 - 1000 lumens (low)

After putting in these bulbs, I see why HIDs do not belong in the factory headlight housing. At 2500 lumens, the glare is already a bit excessive but I've aimed it lower than normal to attempt to reduce it.

Here is a picture of the bulbs:

Notice how they don't have that bluish tint on the bulb. That tint reduces light output and creates more heat. Sure it makes the colour whiter, but I would rather have more light on the road.

I'll try to take a picture of the lighting at night the next time around.

HIR bulbs actually do have a coating on the surface. It reflects IR causing the filament to heat up thus outputting more light. Probably you cannot see it though since IR is not visible light.

I remember seeing that same seller's auction a long time ago. I told myself I'd try it when my SilverStars went out but they're still fine after nearly two years..and now I don't drive that car anymore so I'm on the lookout for something for my car! Definitely post some pictures when you get the chance.

if you're gonna get them, get the 9012's.

I just did a 9005 lo-beam conversion on my Gen 5 SE using GE's Nighthawk bulbs. These bulbs made a huge difference in the amount of light on the road and I would recommend them over my previous SilverStars. They do not have that blue coating, but looking at them straight on they look much whiter than stock. These bulbs are fairly new on the market and are a good compromise to those of us who can't afford $65 (shipped) for a pair of HIR bulbs. The Nighthawks are a good $10 cheaper ($27 a pair in Wal-Mart) than SilverStars and according to GE, have a much longer lifespan. I've ordered up another set for my Hi-beams, and I think I'll modify my stock 9005's and throw them in my fog lamps.
