Question about strut mounts.. Search to no avail!

My wife's 97 camry v6's front suspension is making a crunching noise.. I tightened the 19mm bolt on top of the strut and it made the noise a little better.. Now it is back.. I plan on replacing the strut mounts but when I called Advanced today they said are you sure you dont need the "bearing plate". They have a listing for bearing plates and strut mounts.. Which one do I need or do i need both? Thanks

There is a lot of info about strut mounts and bearing replacement. Mine is a 97 also, and I had to replace mounts , bearings and struts 50K ago.

Gets rid of all of that crunching and jarring sound up front.

Where exactly do these things fail -- Is it in the end just a noise you are paying to get rid of? My 97 has never had this di=one at 193,000Km

The mounts fail often and some have 50K miles on them when the do fail. Most of the time it is the mount itself that fails. I've done a some where i replaced the mount and still had the noise and i had to end up replacing the strut also.

If the struts on a front wheel drive car like this are allowed to go long enough without replacing them when they need to be replaced, they will eventually allow the steering knuckle to travel so far downward that it will damage the CV joint boot, all the grease will eventually be lost, and the CV axle will fail. Subsequent axle replacements are the proverbial "peeing in the wind" until the strut situation is resolved - I know this from all-too-personal experience. God Bless.

^^ on early year gen4's they failed early and they continued to fail.

Toyota replaced the part number and the part was re-engineered. The new part number now solves this problem. I'm on my 4th set of strut mounts at 80K miles and since then its been quiet ever since! Before this, the problem came back every 10K miles or so...
