Hey all,
I need some help. I have a 98 Camry, 4 cyl, automatic and recently when I accelerate, the engine is revving up past 3000rpm and the acceleration is slow. The gears are taking a longer time to change causing the engine to get loud. Also, once I get up around 120km/h, I can't accelerate much more and overdrive doesn't seem to be working properly either. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I'd really appreciate some help.
More then likely it is your tranny other then a sensor! What it is doing is slipping and if it has done it for very long your clutch packs are probably toasted. Check the fluid for level, color and smell. Does it smell burnt or acidic? Probably time for a rebuild or replacement, but before you do that take it to a GOOD tranny shop to get it diagnosed.

Its possible that is is a sensor. My 2005 had a bad sensor in the tranny and it had the same exact symptoms.

I have 235000 Km on the Camry. I did a more thorough examination of the problem and the rpms are about 2300 rpm at 80Km/h and about 3000rpm at 120Km/h. However, when I accelerate above 60Km/h, the engine gets fairly loud and the acceleration is pretty slow. The tranny fluid is ok. Any other suggestions of what it could be? Could it be cold weather? Engine coolant?
Does the car do this when it is fully warmed up? Once the car is fully warmed up the tranny should shift quite normally. Only suggestion i can think of right now is to tighten you transmission cable, which is located right next to the throttle cable. But your problem sounds a bit more serious than that.
By the way with that many KM on the car have you done a transmission fluid flush?
Yes, even when it's fully warmed up it does this. Actually, the fluid is pretty clear..or pink rather. To test the sensor, do they just hook it up to the computer or do I have to replace it first to tell.
They should be able to check the sensors easy enough with a scanner (not a code reader) to see if they are commanding an upshift. Sometimes a tranny problem can be as simple as a split seal on a servo or a check valve in the valve body. But usualy by then you would have almost the same labor cost to rebuild it (clutches, seals etc.) Most of the time you will reuse most of the hard parts unless there is something wrong with them. That is were the parts can get expensive. I would not reuse the old torque convertor though. We automaticaly replace them and make sure that the tranny cooler gets flushed out otherwise you will run old fluid that may have metal pieces or clutch material in it through your nice new rebuilt tranny. You can pick up a ATSG manual from Napa or online for your specific tranny that gives you step by step procedure on rebuilding it. Nice to have even if you have someone else rebuild it,then you know more about what is going on.
By the way I have never had a Toyota tranny out and apart but they are basically the same from one make to another.
