3rd Generation VSV, TTV, BSV - Charcoal Canister

1993 LE I4

I'm working on trying to fix an issue with my canister purging gas when ever I fill up my gas tank. If I let it fill up, or even partially up as soon as I start driving I will have fuel purge out of my canister from the bottom. I have been trying to figure out a cause for this. I was reading up in my Haynes and online here about the different valves that control the emissions system. From what I can understand the line runs from the tank to the charcoal canister. From there one hose runs over to the TTV which is attached to the side of the engine where the coolant enters the engine. After calling around to a few dealerships most belive the culprit could be a bad Thermo valve, and others thought it was the VSV. I was curious if anyone could help explain these vavles a bit more as far as testing them, and possibly finding a replacement if one is damaged. Otherwise does anyone else have any ideas as to why the gas is purging? I'm not getting a check engine light at any time, so I'm not sure if I take it and have the evap system tested if it would pull anything up. Do I have to have a CEL for the system to read any error codes?

Hey thanks for the link, I'll have to test it tomorrow after work.

Any clues on where to pick up the TVV if it does need to be replaced?

3rd Generation

So I'm running into an issue here, and it's starting to greatly confuse me now.
Visited the autozone site listed above and went and tested the valve. I'm getting air when it's hot, not when it's cold like I should. Problem is in the process of removing it both of the plastic tubes broke off from age. Now I looked into replacing the TVV from Advanced, and Autozone but Ican't find it anywhere. I called them and they can't find it in there system and have no idea what I'm talking about. Called to two toyota parts departments here in town and told them what I'm looking for. Neither had the slightest what I was talking about. Kept refering to it as the VSV or something else. I had to explain to them what it did and where it was located, and even then I'm not sure one of them ever found it. One said he did find it and quoted me 76.47 for the part! Well, the other issue i'm running into here is that when I look at my engine compared to some other's and what toyota and Autozone have on there pages, they don't match....

For example I have always noticed that on everyone elses gen 3 5S-FE the exhaust manifold has the large silver heat shild with the O2 sensor on top, then a second shield below that. Mine looks nothing like that at all. I have a heat shield with an O2 sensor, but other then that the lower heat shield is not the same. Also according to Autozone's site and Toyota's page I was looking at my car should have the large brick looking charcoal canister. But in fact mine has the single round one with two leads at the top and two at the bottom. So now i'm hoping to open this up to some others in the community here. Can anyone think of a reason, or where I should search to figure out why the hell is it when I fill up my gas tank it will start to purge liquid gas from the bottom of the canister? I'm not talking a small amount here either, I'm talking about it will purge a large amount, enough to leave a puddle on the ground and let it start running down the road. According to what I have read thus far the Cansiter has a valve at the top of it, and then a check valve on the side. From there a vacuum line runs to the TTV and then to the Throttle body. I previously had tested the two lines on top of the canister and found them to be working. I just tested the TTV and found it to be working. i will test the canister again tomorrow to see if I missed something. On top of that I can't find a check vavle for the canister. One hose runs from the tank to the canister, the other top hose to the TTV. One lower hose runs into the side of my car and the last hose just runs down to the subframe where it purges my gas to the road side.

Did a part number search off the TVV, and it comes up as a Ported Vacuum switch now. That's why I can't find it anywhere. Runs about 62 bucks....so I'll be heading to the P-N-P tomorrow. Guess I'll pick up another canister while there and see if that makes a difference also. Can't seem to find any other reasons and nobody seems to have the slighest idea about fuel leaks when ever I ask about this problem. hey, if it works I'll be sure to update this so someone else who might have a problem would also know.
