3rd Generation Reverse seems to be "slipping"

Hey guys, thopught I'd post here since many of you have had this happen before I did. When I start my Auto trans/'93/4-cyl camry up in the mornings, everything works fine. Goes into F/R gears fine. Once it's warmed up though, and I take it for a drive, then stop and try to put it in reverse, it doesn't really want to move. It'll slowing start to backup on a flat surface. The fluid is at the right level, but is dicolored and dirty. Foward gears work absolutely fine. I've bought some new fluid and the screen/gasket kit. Should I just go and drain the old fluid, and replace the screen, and see if this can help my problem at all? The car has 113k on it. I'm guessing the fluid "may" have been changed once before. I purchased it form the original owner at 98k and the fluid was dicolored, but lazy me never got around to changing it. Thanks

-Chris

I have often read that reverse is the first to go on an automatic transmission. Start investigating replacements. The imported japanese units are supposedly low mile and fairly inexpensive, I just don't know how to match them correctly to a particular engine.

Most everyone discourages changing fluids in a transmission allowed to go for more than 30,000 miles since the last fluid change. Evidently, it causes more harm than good. However, once you decide to put on a different transmission (or do a rebuild) you could try it. If it works you get more use out of your transmission. If it craters, you were going to change it anyway...

Use the Toyota Nation search engine. There is a lot of information on transmissions in the database.
