It's a sort of "growling"noise that rises and drops with the rpm's.
Anyone had similar problems?

Thanks!

no it's not, it's the timing belt hitting the timing belt cover, it goes away at exactly 2k rpm, has nothing to do with the water pump.

It's either a loose belt after years of driving, or a worn tensioner bearing.
Mine did that for half a year now, it's very common in camrys, change them out if you can, or check your belt regularly

Hi..Was the "growling" noise you mentioned kind of like a RRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrring nose? I does sound like it's coming from under the timing belt...the sounds goes away over time and it sporatic.
my 96 Camry has 87K.
Wonder if it's time for a new timing belt.
Thanks

manual says to change at 60k ( if it's the original belt ) newer belt are said to last till 90k. There's a revised pre-tension spring too. Sadly these engines don't have hydraulic tensioners.

I had a water pump go on me as well, but that noise doesn't disappear after certain RPM.

If yours is there all the time and doesn't sound rhythmic, I say check the water pump.

Just a note. If you wind up replacing the timing belt, just replace the water pump at the same time, it's driven by the timing belt, and it will save you a lot of trouble down the line to just do 'em both and be done with it.

camry engine noise

Is the "belt tensioner" something that can be changed without changing out the belt?

Thanks

Yes, but the belt has to come off to get it off. Why put an old piece of rubber back on? Especially when you consider the frustration and expense of a broken timing belt.
