A copy key

Spent $3.50 for a copy key and tried to open door, it works but when tried to start the engine, oh! boy, it did not work. Now I believe it, that chip on the key, and it's good enough for security reason. Goos to have another spare one in case key forgotten in car.

My wife and I encountered this expensive problem when we purchased our 98 XLE new back in early 98. We like to each keep a spare key in my wallet and her purse, in case either one of us locks ourselves out or loses our key. I was not going to spend the money for 2 keys with the chips in them. My solution was to keep the valet key in the ashtray (don't smoke anyway) and purchase two allmetal keys to keep in my wallet and her purse. Open the door with the allmetal key and pull the valet key out of the ashtray and away you go.

So, if you buy just a regular key, and get it cut like the main car key, it will open the doors? so if I went and bought one, I could keep it in my wallet incase I lock my keys in the car?

anyone know where to get a transponder key for the 03 CE? all the ones on ebay are listed for 98-2002...

Hi, a newbie here. I just bought a 1999 Sienna from a private individual who only had one, black-topped computer-chipped key. I tried to get a second computer key made from it by a locksmith, but it failed to program for him. Was it his error, or do I have a valet key? How can I get a second, ignition-capable, key? My local dealer quoted me $1200 on the phone! Thanks, Jim

the dealers ripping you off in my opinion. no key should cost that much unless you dont have the key to copy and want them to go to the trouble of confirming who you are and that you own the car, what key the car takes, and getting it precision laser cut, coded and overnight shipped from the far side of eternity.

my moms buick has the same thing with the resister dojabber in the key. but the valet key doesnt, and that would have to start the car......? wierd.

I hope that is a typo. There is no reason to pay 1200 for a key. That would include replacing the entire security system almost. Call around to some mobile locksmiths that work with dealers. THe one we used at the dealer I worked for coupld program any key to any car. SOmetimes the more high end cars are pricey but you should be able to find someone that can do it.

I was also quoted $1000 for a new set of keys and a new computer. I bought a '99 used and it came with one key, and it was a valet key. It started the car, and opened the doors, but that was it. I had a non chip key cut, it won't start the car. If someone really wanted to steal it they would. So I just cable tied the chipped key under the dash right next to the key cylinder. There is a plastic ring aroud the key cylinder. It has an antena in it that picks up the signal on the chip in the key when it resonates.

they can cut the key with your vin and the key would still work because they have the key with the chips in them they could reprogram

I believe the 4th gen and earlier do not have the reprogramming option. There are a set of keys that comes with the ECU, and that is it. At least that is what I got out of what I was told and what I have read from the research I've done. I seems to me like the newer cars have the option of reprogramming keys. Like all the keys are "generic" until they are programmed to the ECU of the car they are to be used on. Correct me if I'm wrong. Oh I was also told that if I had the code for the chip in the keys, which I guess comes with the original set when you buy the car new. They there would be a possiblity that I could get a new key. Because they could find the right chip code and then cut it.
