so i was driving on the highway the other day and there was no one around so i decided to see how fast my gen3 can go. it barely made it to 80 wth?! the petal was to the floor. and my rpm wouldn't go pass 3k, wth! i know it can make it more than that. at least 100 or 110. i know i dont need to be going that fast. but shiet. its a disappointment.
definitely sounds like there is something wrong. i have a gen 3 4banger and reaching 80 is no prob.. it when you get in the 100 range it struggles. whens the last time you got a tuneup?
i just recently bought the car. i was planning to get a tuneup soon because its a shakes a bit when idle at start up and when popping it into reverse and idle.
Gen3 don't have any governors?
I thought it might be around 110...
because my Subaru Legacy is about there...
but I don't want to try it on my Camry...

Gen 3 V6 XLE, I have been to 135 and no prob.. I got nitrous on it, running a 75 shot now, and 135 comes quick...

And the journey continues........
You guys talking about Miles per Hour or ... Km/h ? My A/T i4 Gen4 hits 180~187 km/h and speed limiter OR rev limited kicks in ~ My stock camry might blow soon I'm assuming ? :p
not sure if the gen4s are governed- but more so the fact that if your car is stock and a 4banger, it may be aerodynamics that's the problem
but regardless, with a stock car, going that fast isn't the best idea in the world anyway
adn 1shotkill- do a full tuneup- injectors, new sparkplugs, all fluids, belts, throttle cleaning, everything you can think of - only being able to go 80mph isn't even safe on highways these days, since it means you can only follow traffic, and can't even speed up if need be for emergency situations

Definitely sounds like it could use a tuneup. Probably some new plugs and wires will do it good.
Wires or plugs but may not need both or anything else . Look for blue discharge around wires on a dark night in a dark place - If shows up get new wires.
Plugs could be removed & inspected but why not throw some new ones in anyway .
This sounds like an electrical problem -- one cylinder not firing - very noticeable at all speeds on a 4 not so noticeable on a 6
hmmm... doesn't really sound like throttle cable problem. Davee is probably right, you probably have a missfire in one of the cylinders. Most likely it's one of your plugs or plug wires, I say, personally if your going to do the plugs, then do the wires and the distributer cap. I know it's kinda overkill, but that's what I usually do that way I rule out all those problems at once, but yea as Davee says might as well put in plugs, cuz plugs don't cost a lot of $$, but if you add plugs, wire and distributer cap than it will add up a little bit. You could also try pullin the distributer cap and seeing if there's any corrosion on the diodes (not sure if that's correct terminology.)
It's pretty simple to change the plugs and wires, just makes sure you know which order the wires go. so I would tape them or something with corresponding numbers if your not familiar with your motor. To remove the plugs I would get a nice socket wrench and a spark plug socket and just pull the plugs out. Very simple, probably a >10min job for a 4 cyl, kinda harder for a 6cyl depending on how you approach it. (when I did mine I just pulled the intake manifold, of course I did all new valve cover gaskets while I was at it, so i wasn't going outta my way to do it.) I would take pics and show you how to do it, but I only have a 6 cyl so hopefully someone with a 4 banger and take some pics if you really need them and draw some nice arrows in with paint for something

kinda strange because i forgot to add that, when i was on the highway i smelled something burning a bit .. not a strong smell like a fire but i can definately sense it.. yeah i'm going to get a tune up soon.
