2nd Generation startup idle speed?!?!?!?!

hey all, I just have a quick question about my gen 2. Every now and then whenever I start up the camry after a minute or two the engine will rev automatically up to 2500 rpm and stay there, then sometimes it will rev then go back down and rev then go back down for at least a few minutes. What could the problem be? Is my automatic choke messed up? I have no idea.

sounds normal mine doesn't quite go that high it goes to about 1500ish range then then it slowly goes down... try cleaning the AIC along with the throttle body

It all depends on how cold it is outside.

In warmer climates (say, above about 45*F) high idle is 1500-1900rpm.

In colder climate (below freezing-ish) high idle can be over 2000.

Just start the car and drive slowly/carefully until the idle goes down to the normal warm idle. Everything sounds fine to me.

No it is not normal! A higher idle when cold is normal but it should not be idling down and then reving up on its own. Check the IAC.

the IACV is probably dirty. the ecu controls this valve but when the valve cannot open/close to the requested amount, then things start going all over the place. If cleaning this doesnt resolve your problem, try adjusting the idle adjustment screw.

My Mum's car did this, today and it was NOT normal!

What is this AMI/IAM Valve thingy and where can I find it? I can clean my mum's car if I can find it.

Did that make sense??? Anyway, just tell me where this valve is...

Calm down, first you need to tell us witch engines your car has (I4 or V6)
or else we cant you tell where the IAC valve is, what temperature it
was when this happend?, and what car does your mom have?

My mums car is a 1991 toyota camry executive wagon with an I4 2Litre engine, standard intake components and tonight (11th Arpil) I was reversing down the driveway and it felt like it was going to cut out something chronic. I got really ticked off at it...

...if anyone on here lives on the sunny coast in queensland and knows about Kmart Tyre and Auto can you tell me if they're any good coz that's the place that last performed the service on my mums car...it gets progressively worse.

Mine usualy stays around 1500-1700 (depending on the temp) for 3min and then
starts to drop down as the engine gets warmer. 2500 is too much, you probably have
a broken temp sensor.

All fixed! replaced the dizzy cap and leads with a new kit from SCA and it goes a lot better, doesn't even make a rattling sound when going up hills according to my mum.

Also don't go to KMart Tyre and Auto, those guys are wankers to me, they didn't even clean the air filter and box when they last serviced my mums car.

> How much power gain do you get if you chop the bottom of the air box off? coz the standard "snorkel" is too small!
