anyone go from 2 cat converters to 1 on an i4?

im in need of replacing the catalytic converter(s) on my 96 5sfe. the cat that is attached to the exhaust manifold is turning out to be pretty expensive to replace. has anyone eliminated that cat, replace the other one with a generic/aftermarket and relocate the oxygen sensor that was after the initial cat to just after the new cat? can that O2 sensor be relocated (with extra wire spliced into place of course)?

later model 5s-fes have 2 cats.

the only ppl that would go from 2 to 1 would be users of aftermarket headers. unless you have visual inspections, i dont see why going with only 1 would be a problem.

i just wasnt sure if there was anything magical about the main cat on my gen 3.5 of why replacing it with a generic wouldnt work. another question, can i take the exhaust from an early gen 3, relocate the O2 sensor and use that on my car?

I never cared to see how many I had. I really only remember the one near the manifold. I do have headers and 1 cat now though. I also used the original o2 sensors. Why get new ones if you only need to replace the cat?

i think the dual cats were done at the same time as the OBD II addition. im only doing this because my CEL is on as a result of a bad cat. im just trying to resolve this problem with as little money as possible.
