Gen5 check engine light o2 sensors failing

I paid my mechanic $75 for diagnostics which pointed to o2 sensors failing. I had to go to work , so I have to come back on wednesday to do more extensive testing to determine if o2 sensors need to be replaced.

The check engine light was off while i was driving home from work. Do the o2 sensors still need to be replaced? Is the job easy? Could I have gotten the check engine codes read less expensively at a pepboys? How do I read the codes myself?

The way the new OBD II diagnostic systems work the problem has to occur two or three times to set a code usually. When he checked the codes it is very possible that he cleared them also. If so then it may take a few times driving it and turning it off for the light to come back on again. IF the light comes abck on then more than likey you are going to ahve to replace the sensors. You can try autozone or pepboys or somewhere like that to have the codes read next time you need. SOme places like that will do it at no charge. Then hopefully you will buy the parts from them.
