Camry & Solara LoungeDiscussion area for every generation of Toyota's family car, the Toyota Camry. Lexus ES250/300 owners welcome! Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance and more.
1. How long has this engine been around? How many generations does it go back to?
2. I assume this is a proven engine. What's the typical mileage on these engines assuming it's well maintained of course.
3. What other Toyota cars use this engine.
4. What year did they stop using this engine?
1) Different places around the world are different...but, they were used in Gen 3.5's in the US...1994/1995 era. Didnt come out till Gen 4 here in Australia.
2) Toyota engines run for a lifetime if maintened correctly. I wouldnt be suprised with 300k+. Although these engines suffer from the sludging problem, so not sure how that effects there life.
3) Used in all sorts of FWD sedans some Four wheel drives. Closest counterparts would be the Solara, Avalon and Sienna.
4) Still using it to this day, Gen 5.5. The Gen 6 uses a new family GR engine...so i guess it will stop here.

Where was it found in the Gen 3.5?? Ive never seen one. Our Gen 3's used 3VZ right up till 1996...when the Gen 4 took over, they used the 1MZ, in 97.
Got any pics?

1MZ-FE came first in the 94 Camry here in teh US. It was then either standard or an option in Avalon, SIenna, ES300, Rx300, and Solara. It was the first generation of the MZ series engine. Arouns 97 or so they offered it with VVt in teh LExus versions. Then offered it in the Toyota's around 99 or so. I am not sure about the exact dates. Starting aroun 2003 or 04 they then offered a #MZ-FE which was the 3.3 liter version of this engine. It was found in the ES330, the Se Camrys and the Siennas.
As for longevity, my brother in law has a 94 cCamry with the 1MZ engine and it now has approximately 196K miles on it. He has had not major engine problems. He has done normal maintenanve on an intermittent basis and replace the timing belt twice I think. Along with the water pump once.
The only theing you ahve to watch out for with the 1MZ is sludge. From about 97 to 2001 they slightly changed the design of the oil passages and if the oil is not changed ona regualr basis it makes it more porne to engine sludge forming. There are many webistes and threads talking about this so you can serach here or do a google search for more info.
I ahve this engine in my 94 Camry also It has 85K miles on it and I have done normal maintenance and replaced the timing belt water pump and seals. I have had no major problems to speak of with thte engine. I also have this engine in my 02 Sienna with VVT-i same thing no problems but it does seem to be a little bit louder than the one in my Camry especially when cold.
