Gen5 Recently Bought a Camry. Have a couple of questions

Hey all,
I recently purchased a 2002 Camry SE V6. It's completely loaded. Leather seats, sunroof, etc. We purchased this car for my wife to drive primarily. She really seems to like it so far.

I do have a couple of questions though. When we bought the car, it didn't come with floor mats. I went to the dealership today and they said i couldn't buy carpet mats, and that the only ones available were the all season rubber ones. Does this make sense?

My next question is, after doing a lot of reading, i was wondering if it is possible to integrate a navigation system out of a new camry into my 02, if so, how difficult would it be?

Next question: Is it possible to swap steering wheels with a newer style (04-06 i believe)that has the audio controls on it? Would the wiring plug right into my existing deck? I've got the 6 cd jbl unit.

And the last question is, whether or not the newer style taillights (Clear on top and bottom) are a direct "bolt on" replacement. I was debating on getting a set and changing the bulbs over to LED style.
If anyone knows the answers to my questions above, and can respond with some feedback i'd greatly appreciate it.

So far this forum looks like it has a wealth of knowledge. I'm looking forward to making it one of my daily stops.

Thanks again.
The New Guy

Welcome and congrats on the Camry! I bought a 03 V6 LE for my dad, but its no where as nice as the SE.

I'm really surprised you can't get floor mats for the 02. They come with them, but maybe they're not producing them anymore? Try ebay...and if not, get some from Canadian Tire or something. The good thing about OEM carpet mats is that they're flameproof....

I'm not sure about the audio controls and Navi, but is sounds difficult.

The newer style tails *should* just bolt right on, typically it's like that during the .5 years. i.e. Gen 5.5. I wouldn't mind doing that either, it'll freshen up the look of the car. Even the new headlights from the SE would look great.

Don't trust the dealers, they lie. There are carpet floor mats for your car. Maybe they didn't have it in stock so they wanted to sell you what they had, the all weather one. Look on ebay, for OEM "real" toyota mats should be about $80 to $120. As for the other question, can't help u there since I own a 94.

Welcome to Toyota Nation.

You should be able to find floor mats on ebay or the link below
http://www.toyotapartsoutlet.com/MC-CAIH-CD.aspx

you should be able to change the navigation system yourself. Doable, but take times. check out the repair manual first. Seems like the difficulty is wiring the antena all the way to the back, but you can put it anywhere you want, as long as it receive the signal. (if your 6 cd changer is in the front, you may lose it due to replacing with the GPS.)

don't know about the steering wheel wiring.

taillight: I saw a post about the tailight in the forum a couple days ago. As i remember, the length of wiring is short. But don't quote on me. I am not sure.

hope these help

Thanks for the information guys.
I checked that link out for the mats. It's weird that they don't offer the carpet ones for the 2002, but do for 03-06. I don't believe there was any changes from 02 - 06 for mats was there.

I'll do some more digging i guess on the taillights to see what i can find. As for the Navigation system. If i wanted to put one in, does it go in place of where my stereo currently is? I'm going to have to go to a dealer or somewhere to look at one that has it to see.

If anyone else knows about the steering wheel, let me know.

That link to the manual is excellent. There's going to be a lot of good reading there for me.

Thanks again!

Cheers

There are also plenty of aftermarket floor mat options. I just bought a great set of carpeted mats for my fiance's Camry for way less than what the dealer wants.

For the floor mats you will probably have to try eBay if you are not ahving any luck with the dealer. There are places that you can buy custom cut floor mats. I know the used car dealer I worked for we would order them from a guy in Alabama. I have some in my 94 Camry and they look almost like OEM. They are not quite as thick and dont ahve the Camry logo but the fit is great. You may try some local upholstery stores in yourarea if all else fails.

For the Nav and steering wheel controls try this site www.oemvalue.com They offer full Toyota Nav systems and may be able to help you with the steering wheel controls. IF you upgrade to the Factory Nav I bet there are inputs for the wheel controls but you may have to replace the steering wheel also. THe nav you can probably do your self if you get it from the link I provided. From what I have seen on thier site it is just a matter of pulling the old stereo and maybe making a few cuts. However that was on my Sienna so it may not be the case with your Camry.

Besides that enjoy the car, well hope your wife does anyway.

It should still be available, that is if your dealer is not lazy and would order them for you. I orderd OEM matts for my 94 camry a year ago and they even still have those. The dealer may not carry stock but they can order.
