tomorrow, i will be getting a '94 camry xlw v6. it has 171k miles. it has some scratches on the body. i'm paying $2300 for it. the car need a new cv boot and cam cover gasket. I will bring it to my uncle's shop and get it fixed. do you guys have any tips on how to take care or what to be aware of my "new" car. I've never owned a toyota before (other than a '81 corolla that i drove for a few months about 2-3 years ago). any tips on the maintenance? thanks in advance.
Make sure the car wasn't in an accident using the vin number, make sure a mechanic sees it too see if it is in good shape, mainly the engine, they can tell.

that's what i did. i took it to my uncle's shop, that's how i learned about the cv boot and the need for a replacement of cam cover gasket. there's oil all over the bottom of the engine especially at the oil pan.
i heard that the cv boots are pretty cheap, but how about the gasket? how much will that cost to replace? I know that the OEM gasket id probably the best (and the most expensive) but how are the aftermarket gasket? are they any good?
i wanted my uncle to do it for me for a low price but he said that i should just go to his shop and fix it myself, he'll just have to tell me what to do, so that i'll learn more about the car. I do know how to take care of my cars, just not how to do any engine work.
copper silicone is the best stuff you can use in conjuction with new valve cover gaskets.
when the cover is off look for "sludge" also invest in an oil pressure gauge that light turns on when it's too late. besides that your good
kragen just came out with a new split boot, i havent tried it but it looks a lot better than the old, flmsy speedy boot that used to be the only one available. And cheap, too, if anyone tries it please post on what you think of these split boots.
thanks for the tips guys. keep it coming if you got them
other questions:
what weight engine and trans oil?
how many gallons of gas does the tank hold?
what does the overdrive actually do?
what color antifreeze do i use?
Engine oil, use 5W-30 or 10W-30. SoCal doesn't get very cold so you can get away with 10W-30. Not sure how much it takes though.
Transmission fluid is probably Dexron III type fluid if it's an automatic. If you pull the dipstick out, it will say what type of fluid to use.
Gas tank holds about 18 gallons
overdrive locks out 4th gear and prevents the torque converter from locking.
Do you have any maintenance records? Do you know when the last time the timing belt was changed?
awesome, thank you. the last owner (my h.s. friend's dad) said that they changed the timing belt last year. i brought the car to my uncle's car today and we changed the auto trans oil and filter. we found out that the crank seal (or whatever its called) might be bad. he said that it should've been changed when they changed the timing belt. i hope that the oil that's near the seal is just the oil that was there before they changed the timing belt.
